Edgar Hoover building, a phone rang for the third time in half an hour. But it went unanswered as the agent of that office was busy analyzing the regression hypnosis tape of an alien abductee. Special Agent Fox Mulder didn't even look up thirty minutes later when his superior, Assistant Director Walter Skinner, burst in. This was the second interruption he'd had. He didn't listen when the A.D.'s assistant came. Why should now be any different? "Agent Mulder." No response. "Agent Mulder!" Skinner called more firmly and annoyed. Mulder held up a single finger (not that finger), indicating for the A.D. to wait, not even turning around. Skinner had had enough. He marched over and pulled the headphones off his most aggravating agent's head. With a bored sigh, Mulder turned in his chair and leaned back. "Agent Mulder, explain. I've been trying to reach you for the past hour. You're suppose to be transcribing tapes_" "I am." Skinner swiped up one of the tapes on the desk. "Not these tapes. You were given an assignment_" "Sir, I'm assigned to the X-Files." "At your request!" Skinner yelled incredulously. "And as such I'm assigned to handle these cases," Mulder responded, calmly. Mulder knew he was pushing it. That vein in Skinner's forehead was popping out again. He also knew he shouldn't goad him so, but he felt it a small price to pay for all he'd had to put up with. "Agent, listening to some nut tell of his experience with little green men does not keep the criminals of this country behind bars!" They'd had this discussion many times before in the years they'd known each other, and still Mulder didn't get it. Or that is to say he got it, he just didn't care. "Mulder," Skinner sighed, calming. "I backed you up when you wanted this assignment because I believe it's important for people to believe in their work and I saw that this meant a great deal to you for obvious reasons." Mulder looked down and rubbed his face tiredly. "But when a superior gives you a new assignment you are expected to do it. If you want to keep your X-Files, then you need to start following the rules. Otherwise no defense from me will help you. Understand?" Mulder looked up at the man before him. Finally he said, "Yes, sir." Skinner nodded. "Now, speaking of new assignments, I have one for you." "What about the tapes?" "That's been handed off to Maloney." "Okay. So what is it?" "My office. One o'clock." Then the A.D. turned and walked out. ************************************* Mulder stepped off the elevator and headed towards Skinner's office. Out of nowhere a little girl, maybe four or five years old, came running in his pathway. He stopped abruptly so as not to run over the surprising addition to the FBI building, but not fast enough. She bumped into his legs spilling water on his pants from the knee down. "Molly!" a woman's voice called. Mulder looked up to see a woman with the same fire red hair as the child, hurry over. She was attractive enough. Petite. At her full height she probably only reached his shoulder, if that. She had full red lips. Little yet immaculate make-up adorned her porcelain skin. Mulder was mesmerized for a moment by her looks. He could get used to waking up to someone like that every morning. "I'm very sorry," she said pulling him back to the present. Then to the child. "Molly be still." She stood up to face him. "It's only water, so_" "Yes, well. It's fine. But this is no place for kids." Her head snapped up and he noticed she had sparkling blue eyes. Those eyes narrowed and he realized he must have sounded more harsh than he'd intended. "Yes, well," she said, coldly. "Again. Sorry. Come on, Molly," she said, taking the child's hand. "Bathroom's this way." With a last glare, the woman left. Mulder winced and was certain he felt the temperature drop about ten degrees before she left. He wasn't sure that was one cold fish he could live through thawing. Besides, she had a kid. Not his area of expertise. Far from it. Probably married, but with an ice casing like that, he wasn't sure how. He half wondered what she and the girl were doing here. Family of another agent? Putting her out of his mind, he continued towards the A.D.'s office. ************************************* Skinner looked up at the knock on the office door. His assistant poked her head in. "Sir, Agent Mulder is here." "Good. Send him in." He stood as Mulder entered. Mulder took in the scene. His boss standing sternly behind his desk. Three other men he didn't know stood or sat around the office. "Agent Mulder. Thank you for coming." "Wouldn't miss it." "Fox Mulder this is Scott Paulson, US Marshal's Office. David Young, Baltimore PD. And Special Agent Kevin Ashman." Mulder shook their hands. "So, you've got a new assignment for me," he said taking a seat. "Agent Mulder are you familiar with an Antonio Luccinni?" Skinner asked. "Vaguely. The FBI has a case on him for drug smuggling, illegal imports. Nothing concrete. He's believed to have killed, or had someone else kill, ten people." "One of those," said Paulson, "is a Dr. Harrison Manning. He's_" "Former CEO of Manning Pharmaceuticals," Mulder finished. "Manning's company came up with a new miracle drug. It's still in the experimental stage but it's suppose to be a pill that has the ability to slow down the growth of cancer cells until they stop all together and then break themselves down to be released from the body. Unlike chemo this would only take a matter of weeks with no chance of remission." "Why was he killed?" "Manning and Luccinni have a history," Young put in. "They grew up together. Their fathers were . . . business partners. Luccinni followed in his father's footsteps. Manning didn't but they stayed in contact." "And?" Mulder prompted. Paulson handed over a file. "Eighteen months ago, Luccinni's brother was diagnosed with cancer. Manning informed his old friend of a drug one of the doctor's there had developed. He got him some of this drug for the brother. But apparently the drugs did the exact opposite. They slowed it at first then out of nowhere they sped up the growth. Last month this brother died of his cancer. Luccinni blamed Manning." "Fellas, I pride myself on being a pretty sharp tack but I'm failing to see the point." "You're new assignment, Agent Mulder," Skinner said, "is as a bodyguard." "For who? Manning's dead." "Manning isn't the only person Luccinni blames. He also blames the doctor who discovered the drug." "He's not dead yet?" "She has been under our supervision since Manning's death." "She?" "Dr. Dana Scully." Paulson handed over another file but Mulder didn't open it. "She's worked for Manning's company for a little over five years. She also is going to be a witness against Luccini for his other crimes once we get a court date." Mulder looked around at the other men in the room and sighed. "Babysitting, huh?" "Would you prefer vampires?" Paulson asked, finally speaking up. Mulder started to speak but Skinner stopped him. "Don't answer that. This is your new assignment." "Why so many facets of law enforcement involved?" "We all have personal reasons, Agent Mulder," Young said. "Okay. So when do I meet the good doctor?" The others were saved from answering as the door opened. Mulder's jaw dropped. "I'm sorry, Mr. Skinner," said the petite redhead, trying to control the little girl next to her. "Molly discovered the water cooler_" She stopped as she noticed Mulder watching her. Her eyes narrowed but all she said was, "Molly, settle." The little girl obeyed. "We were just discussing you. Special Agent Fox Mulder this is Dr. Dana Scully and her daughter, Molly. They will be in your care for the next few weeks. Agent Ashman will be your partner." Dana stuck out her hand stiffly. "Agent Mulder." Mulder took it, dazed and wondered who he'd killed in his last life to deserve this. "Here's all the information you'll need," Skinner said, handing Mulder three files. "You and your escorts will leave for the safe house in two hours. Dr. Scully and her daughter will wait here. I suggest you go pack, Agent Mulder." "Yes, sir." Skinner buzzed his assistant. "Lisa. Come in here, please." A moment later the door opened. "Sir?" "Please make the Scullys comfortable until Agent Mulder returns." "Yes, sir." Skinner turned to Dana. "Anything you need just ask Lisa." "Thank you," she said. She shot a last annoyed and wary glance at Mulder. "Come, Molly." They left. The other men followed leaving Mulder and Skinner alone. "Sir, what is this?" "I'm not sure I follow." "Why me? There have to be a hundred other agents who could_" "Are you refusing?" He sighed. "No. Sir. It's just . . . I don't think I'm the right one for this job. I get the feeling the good doctor doesn't like me much. And I think the feeling is mutual." "You don't have to like each other. You just have to protect her." "I'm no good with kids." "No one expects you to be." "Sir_" "Mulder, you want to stay on the X-Files?" Mulder didn't have to answer. "Then I suggest you play nice and show the guys upstairs. Besides, I trust you to handle this assignment with the best of your abilities. I don't think anyone else could cut it. Now go pack." Mulder sighed again, then left. ************************************* Two hours later, Mulder, now dressed casually, exited the elevator on the third floor of the FBI building. He paused at the scene before him. Dana and Paulson stood close, talking, two bags at their feet. Molly was held by her mother's hand but she was more interested in the button on her pink sweater. Mulder could slightly make out what was being said. "Dana, it'll be fine. Soon you'll be safe. It's only a matter of time before we catch him." "I know," she said sounding less convinced. "Hey." He tilted her chin up to look at him. "I promise it'll be okay. Then we can get on with our life_" "Scott_" "Shh. I know. I know. But I'm hoping you'll realize how much I care for you and maybe . . . you'll come to care for me, too." Dana didn't answer and Scott kissed her forehead. From the way she acted, Mulder guessed she didn't return the sentiment. Scott knelt down to Molly's level. The girl stopped fiddling with her button and looked warily at him. "Okay, sweetie. You be good for your mom, okay?" "Yeah," she said, unconcerned, and went back to her button. Scott pulled her into a hug and Molly scrunched up her face, obviously displeased, and tried to wriggle free. Finally, with a kiss on her cheek, he let go. She quickly rubbed it away in disgust. He stood again and smiled at Dana. "Maybe you could work on her about me?" "Scott, she's four. It's nothing personal. She's stubborn." "No," Molly said looking at her mother, annoyed. "Molly," Dana chided and the child pouted. Scott kissed Dana's cheek. Again, not much of a response. "Be safe." Mulder cleared his throat and the pair looked up to see him watching them. He nodded and came over. Maybe he was crazy but he swore he could actually see the wall go up around Dana Scully and the temperature drop again. This could be a long assignment. "Agent Mulder," Paulson said in greeting and stuck out his hand. "They're ready to go." Mulder shook it. "Good. Me, too." "Take good care of my girls." "That's my job." Dana picked up Molly's small red, white and purple duffel bag. She started to get her own suitcase but Mulder beat her to it. Their eyes met for a moment. Then she straightened and headed for the elevator, with Molly in tow. Mulder turned to follow. "Hey, Mulder," Paulson said, with hand on the agent's arm to stop him. "I mean it. You make sure nothing happens to Dana." Mulder smiled in a way he knew would bug Paulson. "Dr. Scully will have my undivided attention." With that he headed over and the three got on the elevator. ************************************* The ride down to the parking garage was quiet. When they got off they met up with Ashman who was waiting with the other four agents that would be their escort. "We're all ready if you are," Ashman said. "Ready," Mulder said. "Mulder, I've got some things to take care of before I head out. I'll meet you there," Ashman said. "Fine," Mulder said. The four other agents got in their cars. Mulder put the girls' bags in the trunk of the unmarked car while Dana buckled Molly in the back. "Momma?" he heard Molly say. "Hm?" "Will this be a long trip?" When Dana's face softened into a smile, he was surprised. He didn't think it possible. He realized she was really pretty when she smiled. More than that, she was beautiful. "Yes, sweet pea. But don't worry. We'll make it fun." Then she got in the front seat and when Mulder did too he noticed the wall went up again. Finally they were ready to head out and the drivers of the cars did just that with Mulder's car in the middle of the other two. They rode in silence for about ten blocks before Mulder decided to speak. "It'll take about four hours to reach the safe house," he said. "Okay." She continued to look out the passenger window. "Look. I'm sorry about before. I didn't mean to sound harsh." "No harm done." 'Yeah right,' he thought and sighed. Strike one. She was not going to make this easy, was she? "Truth is I don't have much experience with kids_" "Well, that's not your job, now is it?" He shook his head. Not easy at all. "So. You know Paulson well?" She finally looked at him but only to watch closely. Then she turned away again. "He's a friend." "A friend." "A good friend." "I see." He heard a burst of air from her in disgust and saw her mutter something under her breath. Strike two. He glanced back to see Molly was already asleep. "She's a cute kid. Reminds me of my sister." "Really." "Yeah. Growing up we_" She turned to face him suddenly. "Look, Agent Mulder, was it?" He nodded. "You don't need to be interested in us. And we don't need to be interested in you. All you have to do is keep us alive. Anything you want to know about me or my daughter is in that file in your suitcase. Let's make this easy on all of us and not pretend to care. We'll all be better off for it, okay?" With that she turned away again. "Whatever you say, doc." Strike three! You're outta there! Yeah, this would be a *very* long assignment. ************************************* It was well after dark by the time they reached the safe house. All three cars pulled to a stop in the long driveway and the occupants started getting out. Mulder turned to his sleeping passengers. He gently nudged Dana. "Hey, doc. Dr. Scully." "Mmh." She stirred and opened her eyes meeting his. He again noticed how attractive she was. Waking from sleep she looked innocent and vulnerable. The ice wall was nowhere in sight. "Home sweet home." He got out and Dana looked at the house before her. Her face fell. 'It starts.' Pushing aside her dismay she got out and proceeded to pull the sleeping Molly from her seat then headed inside. As Mulder closed the trunk again and watched her go he realized this must be tough on both of them. He decided to make an effort to not egg her on so. He picked up the bags and headed inside. ************************************* After placing his bag in his own room, he headed off to check out the house, a spacious one level, see where the girl's would be staying and drop off their bags. He found them in the room across the hall and one down from his. The light was on, the door open a crack. Quiet voices came from inside. He could see them through the slight opening. Molly lay in the bed half asleep. Dana sat next to her, leaning close. "Momma? Are we going to be okay?" "Of course, sweetie." "How do you know?" she asked innocently. "Because. I'm the mom." Molly giggled and Dana smiled. "Because we have some very good men looking after us." "Like Agent Mulder?" He noticed Dana pause and look away. "Yes," she finally said. "Like Agent Mulder." "You don't like him, do you." It wasn't a question. "I don't know him." Molly gave her mother a ëdon't patronize me' look. Dana laughed quietly. She brushed Molly's curls off her face. "I can't lie to you, can I. I'll be right across the hall if you need me, okay?" Molly nodded. "Kiss." Molly hugged and kissed her mother then turned on her side and tucked her tiny hands beneath her cheek. Within minutes Mulder heard quiet breathing coming from inside. He stepped back as Dana stood and started for the door. The light went out and the door opened. "Oh!" Dana cried in surprise. "I wasn't expecting you there." "Sorry." He held up the bags. "I was just looking for you two." "Well. Here we are." She stuck out her hands. He handed her Molly's but not her own. "You're in here?" he asked pointing to the door behind him. She nodded and he turned and went in, turning on the light. He set the suitcase on her bed. When he came back out he noticed Dana no longer held Molly's bag. She'd put it in the child's room. They stood a moment in uncomfortable silence. "Well, goodnight," she said, her voice once again, cold. She started past but he stopped her. "Wait. Listen. I really am sorry about before. I didn't mean to come off so . . . uncaring." Her face softened only slightly. "Well . . . I'm sorry, too. You really did nothing wrong, I'm just . . . stressed." He chuckled at her understatement. "Who wouldn't be, in your situation?" She nodded then turned again but sighed when he spoke up. "Molly, she's quite a kid. She looks like she's four but talks like she's eight." "Yes, she's very special." "I was surprised_" "Look, Agent Mulder. No offense, but what I said before still holds. It's better if we just keep to ourselves, okay?" He nodded finally and she entered her room closing the door. 'Well, the Ice Queen doesn't leave for long,' he thought. With a last glance at the closed door he headed out to the living room. He found the four other agents lounging around in front of the TV. One looked up. "Ashman called. Said he'd be here day after tomorrow." Mulder nodded. Then started to head for the front door. He stopped. "Hey guys. Turn it down. They're trying to sleep." With that he headed out closing the door behind him. ************************************* After an hour out in the fresh night woodsy air, Mulder felt he'd had enough and decided to go to bed. He'd come in to find Sanderson asleep on the couch, and Dorsey in one of the recliners, the TV on mute. The others must have gone to bed. He'd just barely fallen asleep when a loud noise awoke him. It sounded like glass breaking. He grabbed his gun and ran out. Dana was just entering the hall pulling on her robe. "FREEZE!" "Don't move!" and guns being cocked were heard from the kitchen. "What is it?" she whispered. "I don't know. Stay here." He headed for the kitchen, gun raised. She was right behind him. The four other agents blocked her view then she and Mulder heard the quiet whimpers of a child. "Molly?" Scully pushed her way through the barricade of broad shoulders, Mulder right behind her. There stood Molly a broken glass at her feet. Her eyes filled with tears and her chin trembled as she looked in fear at the four guns pointed at her. "Molly!" Molly raised her hands to her mother. "Momma," she sobbed. "Put your guns down," Dana ordered, lifting Molly up into her arms. She yelled when they didn't moved, "Put them down now! You're scaring her! Don't you know the difference between a child and hit man?" Mulder started pushing their hands down and they obliged. He nodded at them and they all left. Dana had taken a seat at the table, holding Molly tight and rocking her slightly. "Molly. Shhh. It's okay. Momma's here. Shhh." "I just wanted some water," the little girl sobbed. "I . . . I couldn't wake you." "Shh. I know, baby. I know. It's okay." Dana pulled back to look at Molly and she noticed blood on the girl's nightgown. She looked at Molly's hand where a little cut was on the palm. Molly's tears started again. "Oh, sweetie. It's okay." She kissed her head. "It's not too bad. I'll fix it." Dana looked up as Mulder knelt beside them. He held a plastic cup of water and a first aid kit. "Thank you," Dana said in surprise and took the kit. He nodded and handed the cup to Molly. He rubbed her head as she drank. "It's okay, Molly. It's all on the government's tab. I think they've even got some Band-Aids with cartoons on them in the kit." Molly smiled and giggled. Mulder smiled back. "Okay," Dana said, once a Tiny Toons Band-Aid was on. "All, done. Let's get you back to bed." Molly hopped off her mother's lap. "Thanks, Mulder," she said. "You're welcome, Molly. Goodnight." He stood to face Dana. "Yes, well, thank you," she said still a little coolly. Then she took Molly's hand and headed off to bed. Mulder sighed, wondering if he'd ever be able to get her to smile at someone besides just her daughter. ************************************* Dana awoke to the sound of muffled voices and delicious smells from the kitchen. She rolled over and looked at the clock: 10:03. She sighed, partially in self reprimand and part in contentment. She smiled. It'd been a long time since she'd slept in later than 7:30. Molly was most definitely a morning person. Had been since the day she was born and Dana's life hadn't been the same since. Her smile faded as she realized something was wrong. Why hadn't Molly woken her up? Trying not to panic but failing, Dana jumped our of bed and hurried out of the room to where the voices came from. She stopped as she saw Molly sitting at the island counter on one of the stools. The little girl was leaning against the counter top as she watched Mulder cook. "Then we went and saw the lion and I decided that was my favorite animal." "Really," he said as he divided the scrambled eggs from the pan to three plates. "Good morning," Dana said. "Mommy!" Molly hopped off the stool and ran to her mother who swung her up into a hug. "Mm. Morning pumpkin." Molly pulled back to look at her mother. "Mulder made blueberry pancakes." "Really." Dana looked to Mulder but spoke to Molly. "Honey, why didn't you wake me up? We didn't have our morning cuddle." "Mulder said to let you sleep. He said you were very tired." "Oh. Well, Agent Mulder will have to learn to mind his own business," Dana said pointedly. "I like our morning cuddles." "We can cuddle now." Dana smiled at Molly. "I hoped you'd say that." "Breakfast is ready," Mulder said trying not to be offended by Dana's rudeness. "Oh, Mommy, I'm starving! Can we eat first?" "Sure," she said with a glare to Mulder. Mulder let it go and brought the plates over to the already set table. "Enjoy," he said, taking a seat. He scooped up some eggs but stopped at Molly's voice. "Wait! We have to say grace." "Oh." Mulder set his fork down and took the hand Molly offered. She held her mother's hand in the other. "Mommy, you have to take Mulder's hand." "Honey, I don't think Agent Mulder is a religious person_" "By all means," Mulder held our his other hand. "I think it's important to encourage a child's beliefs." "Mommy, we always hold hands at grace. You can't leave Mulder out. Besides, the food's getting cold." "Yeah," said Mulder. "The food's getting cold." Dana glared then finally took his hand. He noticed how small and soft it was, but cold. 'Cold hands, warm heart,' his mind voiced. Doubtful in her case, he thought back. He squeezed her hand ever so slightly hoping to warm it up. The second Molly finished praying Dana pulled her hand away. They ate in silence except for Molly jabbering away about a dream she'd had. ************************************* An hour and a half later breakfast was over and things cleaned up. Dana came out of the bathroom dressed after her shower, drying her hair with a towel. She found Mulder in the living room. He put his wallet in his back pocket and slipped on his black leather jacket then picked up his keys. "Going somewhere?" He looked up but before he could answer Molly came in. "I'm ready!" Dana turned and her jaw dropped. Gone was her beautiful little girl replaced by a child in boys clothes, a dark short curly wig, a baseball cap and sunglasses. "Where do you think you're going?" Dana asked. "And dressed like that?" "We're going to the store," Molly replied. "Whoever was suppose to do the shopping from the last time this place was used forgot. We're low on supplies," Mulder put in. "I don't think it's safe to take Molly out and I don't appreciate you telling her she could go." "Actually, you're both coming. We need food and Ashman isn't here to stay with you. The others left early this morning to check out the perimeter. I can't be in two places at once, so no, it's not too safe to take you out but it'd be less so to leave you here unprotected. Besides, we've got these." He held up another wig and sunglasses. "Come on, Mommy," Molly said. "It'll be fun." Dana looked between the two of them then sighing she grabbed the wig and went to her room. A moment later she came out, make-up done and with now long brown hair. "Okay." She slipped on her sunglasses and took Molly's hand. "Let's go." "Wait!" Molly said. "I have to go to the bathroom." She hurried off. Mulder and Dana waited for a moment in silence. She pushed her sunglasses up on her head. "May I ask," she finally said, "why I now have a son instead of a daughter?" Mulder shrugged. "Better cover. Anyone looking for us would expect a red haired woman and her matching daughter. This way we won't even be close." He then checked the clip of his gun. Dana eyed it cautiously. "I'd appreciate it if you didn't leave that around where Molly could reach it." He didn't even look up from inspecting him weapon. "It might surprise you to know, Dr. Scully, that in training at Quantico they teach us the importance of gun safety. Until we learn that, we aren't allowed to have one. I've already talked to her about it. She knows it's dangerous. Besides, it's either always on me," he slipped it into his shoulder holster, "or in the top of my closet unloaded." He smiled. "I'm not as incompetent as I look." Just then Molly returned. "Ready." With a last glance at Mulder, Dana took Molly outside. Mulder rolled his eyes then followed, locking the door. ************************************* Mulder steered the car back up the long driveway several hours later. He knew it was risky keeping them out but he also knew it'd be awhile before they got out again so they'd spent a while at the zoo then roamed the ëmall' for awhile then did their shopping. He noticed even Dana had stopped looking over her shoulder and relaxed a little. Molly was once again asleep in the back. The sun had set over half an hour ago. "Sorry we're getting back so late," he said to Dana. He stopped as they neared the house. His jaw dropped as he parked. "Maybe it was a good thing." "What do you mean?" Dana turned and her jaw dropped as well. "Oh my . . ." Before them lay the smoldering embers of the safe house. "Looks like they found us," Mulder said. "But how_" Dana was cut off as a gun shot sounded and one of the back side windows was shot out. Several more shots came from the woods. "Get down!" Mulder yelled. He threw the car into drive and hit the gas hard. Dirt, rocks and wood chips were kicked up as the car peeled out. "Molly!" Dana reached back unfastening the little girl and pulled her up front. Mulder pushed them down. "Stay down until I say otherwise! I don't think they're done yet," he finished as he saw two headlights behind them and gaining. Another three shots took out the back window. Dana cried out in surprise. Molly started crying. "Shh. Molly, it's okay. We'll be okay," Dana said in a not so calm voice. Her eyes met Mulder's and he floored the gas as far as he could. 'Where's a state trooper when you need one?' he thought frantically. He didn't think the guys behind them would risk a run-in with someone who could radio for back up. They had one target only and most likely strict instructions not to get caught. Soon they'd reached the town. The other car backed off slightly, but not completely. Every turn Mulder made they followed. He was going about fifty in a twenty-five and still no cops. He pulled back onto the main street hoping to lose them in the traffic but even weaving in and out the other car stuck with them. Mulder scanned ahead for anyway out, then he saw it up ahead. Flooring it he gained enough speed to distance them from their pursuers. Then he swerved through traffic into a dark alley. He stopped the car and turned off the lights. The shadows were deep enough in the night that they wouldn't be seen. "Stay down." Watching from just over the seat he saw the other car speed past. "Wait here," he said pulling out his gun. Slowly he got out of the car and made his way to the corner of the building. He quickly peeked out and saw the other car coming back towards them slowly, the occupants searching the crowded street. Then the passenger slammed his hands on the dash and the driver peeled off angrily. Mulder jumped into the shadows as the car passed. He leaned against the building in relief, breathing hard and willing his heart to slow down. Confident he was able to go back calmly, he headed back to the car, opened the trunk and pulled out a duffel bag. Dana got out of the car, trying to control her shaking. "Are they gone?" "Put your wig back on. We've lost them for now but they won't be giving up." She did so as she watched him. "What are you doing?" He closed the trunk. "How's Molly?" "Scared to death, now will you answer me?" she said angrily. He picked up the bag. "They've seen the car and probably us. We need a new car and new disguises. They could come back. Get Molly." Without a word she did as told. Mulder turned off the car and pocketed the keys. He'd tell Skinner where it was and he could send someone to get it. They'd have to replace the window though. With her wig in place and Molly in her arms, Dana was ready to go. Mulder led her to the alley opening. He took a quick glance around then, with a hand on her back, guided her out into the crowd. There were a lot of people out for this time of night. He'd be surprised if he didn't already know the town's annual carnival was on it's third night. "Act natural," he whispered to her. He surprised her when he put his arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer. She glanced up at him. He had a calm almost serene look as he expertly scanned the crowd. He was good. If she didn't know he'd just been in a high speed car chase with deadly hit men she'd almost believe he was just some guy out for the evening with a woman and child. Maybe his own family. She turned away pushing that thought aside. He pulled her to a stop and led her into a hotel lobby. "Try to keep your face averted just in case," he said before they stepped through the second set of doors. Then a smile covered his face as he called out pleasantly to the clerk. "Good evening!" "Good evening to you, sir. How may I help you?" Mulder set down the bag. "Well, I need a room for the night." "I believe I can help you. One bed or two?" "One will be fine." Dana's eyes widened. "Just fill this out." Mulder took the pen and started filling out the paper. "Is it all right to pay in advance?" "Of course." The clerk glanced over to where Dana and Molly were waiting. Dana turned a little more so that long wig combined with how she held Molly covered their faces. "You and your family here for the carnival?" Mulder glanced over then back, smiling. "Yes we are. Heard from a friend it was the best one around." Dana's eyes widened even more behind her hair. "That it is. What's your son's name?" "Michael. After my father," Mulder said without missing a beat. "Michael. That's a fine name. I ask because my wife is close to her due date. Our first. It's a boy. We've had trouble deciding on a name." "Yes, well, we know how that is. Here you go." He gave back the form then paid. "Okay," the clerk said. "Check out is at 11 AM. We have a complimentary all you can eat continental breakfast from 6-9. Your room is second level all the way down. We've got an indoor pool and ice is down the hall." Mulder took the keys with another smile. "Thanks." He picked up the bag and came back to Dana, putting his arm around her again. "You and you're family enjoy the carnival." "Thank you. Goodnight." He led her back outside. "Agent Mulder_" He kissed her forehead and smiled at passersby. "Smile, honey. We're here for the carnival." She shut her mouth, pursing her lips as he led her up the stairs and to their room. Once he closed the door behind them she shrugged him off roughly and moved to the other side of the room. He didn't seem too phased as he set the bag on the bed. "You seem upset." "Upset?!" she whispered outraged. She set the now sleeping Molly on the bed and pulled off her shoes. "Why on earth would I be upset?" He stopped her from her task. "Don't get too comfortable. We won't be staying long. Just long enough to call Skinner and arrange for a new hideout. Now, you were saying?" "What was that about?" "What was what about?" he asked pulling out a phone book and flipping through it. "Downstairs! Your arm around my shoulder! The 'yeah, I brought my family for the carnival'! Your kissing my head? One bed??" "Calm down. It was an act. Don't worry. I'm not going to try anything, if that's what you're worried about. Truth is your not my type." He picked up the phone and set it on the table taking a seat. "Not your type? What's that suppose to mean?" She was on the verge of hysterics. "It means I don't go for short and uptight." "Short and uptight??" His calm uncaring attitude was bugging the heck out of her. "Well isn't that just great! Well, you're not my type either!" "Ooh, 'sticks and stones', Dr. Scully. Don't hurt my feelings. Anyway, I know I'm not your type. That'd be semi-tall and uptight." "What?" "Paulson. You know, you two were made for each other." "Scott is a friend." "Right." "As if it's any of your business! Look, he's done a lot for me and Molly_" "Good for him." He scanned the pages of the phone book in his lap. She turned away. "I wouldn't expect you to understand." "Oh and why's that?" he asked not really caring. "I know your type. You're a loner. You date once in awhile but only for the challenge. Your work is your life and you care about no one but yourself. You have no intention of a serious relationship and therefore don't understand how the rest of us can care about love and children_" He stood angrily cutting her off and causing the book to fall to the floor. He stepped towards her causing her to step back. She could see the fury, pain and fear in his flashing eyes. "Listen here, doc. You don't know the first thing about me. I may be a loner but I've got my reasons. Just like you've got yours for being some sort of ice queen. You're right, I don't intend on or care about having any sort of family because I've seen what family is like. It's not always love and happy homes, Christmases and birthdays. Sometimes family is losing what you took for granted and then in a sense losing who's left because they can't deal with the loss. I'll tell you what family is. It's one big pain in the neck and I don't need that again. Ever! "And as for you, your opinion means very little to me. As you made so blatantly obvious that first day, my job is to keep you alive until the 'bad guys' are caught and that's what I'll do. I'm paying my dues and then you and I can go back to our separate and very different lives and pretend this never happened. And you. You accuse me of being a loner but you cut yourself off completely too. I've tried to be civil with you and you bite my head off. A man who you claim has done a lot for you and your daughter tries to show you he cares and you brush him off. So much for caring about relationships." He stood there breathing hard. "So, Dr. Scully, don't talk to me about being a loner." He turned away and Dana stared in silent shock. Mulder took a seat on the bed and laid his head in his hands, letting out an exhausted sigh. "My gosh," she whispered. His head came up but he didn't turn. Slowly, Dana moved around and knelt before him. He looked up and met her gaze, now full of compassion. "What'd they do to you?" He watched her quizzically. She looked down embarrassed. "I . . . I've heard stories about you. About what you do and why you do it." He scoffed. "Spooky Mulder, eh? Good ghost stories for around the campfire, don't you think? Who told you?" "Scott. He heard from Ashman. He fought really hard to get someone else assigned to me but . . . Mr. Skinner wouldn't allow it." "Maybe he should have." "I'm not so sure." He looked up at her and they watched each other a moment before she looked away. "Can you . . . tell me about it?" He looked at her. "No." She looked down again and nodded. "I've got calls to make. Try to get some sleep." He stood and picked up the phone book and the phone then moved to sit at the table again. Dana watched him a moment then moved to the bed and laid down next to Molly, pulling her closer. Mulder opened the book and dialed a number, the false cheer back in his voice when it was answered. "Yes, I'd like to rent a car. Thank you." He looked up and his eyes met Dana's who watched him in the dark. Then she closed her eyes and tried to sleep. Mulder finished that call then made another. "Skinner." "Sir, it's Mulder." "Agent Mulder, Ashman's on his way. He'll be at the safe house in thirty minutes." "Then he'll want a tank of oxygen and a well insulated fire retardant suit." "What?" "The safe house is nothing but a pile of smoking rubble." "What?? It burned?" "'Ashes, ashes, we all fall down.'" "Dr. Scully_" "Is asleep right now with her daughter. They're fine." "What happened? Where are you?" "We had to go out for food. Don't worry disguises all the way. Goldilocks ate the porridge but forgot to fill the cupboards." "Johnson's a dead man." "Don't be too hard on him. If we hadn't gone out we could be a part of those ashes. We got back and saw it still smoldering. Then they fired on us from the trees. Took out the back window. We had a little chase through town but I finally lost them. Had to ditch the car." "Where are you?" Mulder cautiously glanced out the corner of the curtains. "I think I'll have to hold off on that." "Mulder_" "Sir, someone knew we were there." He sighed. "Good point. All right, when you think it's safe call me on the number." "Will do." "Get some rest, Agent Mulder." "Night, 'dad'." Mulder hung up and looked out the window as someone passed. He picked up his gun and moved to the door as a knock sounded. "Who is it?" "George Monroe. I run the hotel." Mulder looked out the peep hole and saw the clerk from before. He put his gun away and opened the door. "Yes?" "A man from a rental company gave me this key to give to you. He said the car is the silver Intrigue straight down." "Thank you." The man left and Mulder closed the door then went over to the bed. "Dr. Scully. Wake up." "Mm What?" "It's time to go." Dana sat up and Mulder held out some clothes to her. They were hers. "Where'd you get those? All our stuff burned_" "Always be prepared. Go change." She took the clothes and headed to the bathroom. She came out and Mulder gave her some clothes for Molly. He packed up their stuff then put away all he'd used. "Ready," Dana said. Mulder looked up and nodded. He checked outside then headed them out and down to the car. *********************************** Dana opened her eyes sleepily to see the sun shining through the window. Contentedly, she closed them again. But something wasn't right. She was in a bed. But last night she'd been in a car. She sat up quickly and looked around. She sighed in relief to see Molly asleep next to her. And then she noticed she was in her pajamas. But she didn't remember changing. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. "Good morning." Her head snapped up to see Mulder had exited the bathroom, his wet hair and the towel he held indicating he'd just finished showering. Thankfully he had a pair of jeans on. Un- thankfully he had yet to put on a shirt. Dana pulled the blanket up more to cover herself, feeling very self conscious. "Morning," she mumbled. She glanced around the room as if trying to make sense of it. "You were so out of it last night I just carried you in. Molly, too." She glanced down at herself and tugged at the sleeve of her pj's. She looked back up at him and he couldn't help but smile as she cleared her throat nervously. "How'd_" "Don't worry. You changed yourself. I was all ready to let you sleep in your clothes." "Oh. Of course. Right. I, uh, I think I remember . . ." He nearly laughed at the relief that covered her face. "Where are we?" She tried not to notice the fact that the man before her was only half dressed and had a well toned body. He moved over to the bag on the table and pulled out a shirt and slipped it on. She felt it easier to breath all of a sudden . . . almost. "A little town called Harlan about 15-20 miles west of Ft. Wayne." "Ft. Wayne. As in Indiana?" "Wow. Geography wiz to boot. I'm impressed." He sat down and slipped on his shoes. "Why are we here?" "This is as far as we could get on the gas we had and I figured you'd be more comfortable in a bed than a car." "Oh. How far are you planning on going?" "Idaho." "What??" "I know a place there where we can stay and no one will find us." "How do you know?" "Because there's no way to connect it to the Bureau, you or me." He stood. "You'd better get ready. We've got a long drive ahead of us." She nodded and he moved to rummage through the bag. Dana turned to wake Molly but found her smiling smugly up at her. Dana rolled her eyes. ************************************* The sun was near setting when Mulder pulled to a stop at a gas station and turned to his passengers. "Last stop before we get to the new hideout. That's about three hours away. You may want to take a bathroom break while you can. Stretch your legs." Dana got out and pulled Molly out as Mulder moved around to the gas pump. She headed to the convenience store. Mulder watched her go as the pump filled the tank. It'd been a quiet three days since they'd left Indiana. He'd tried several times but the only conversation he got was when Molly was awake. Dana had stuck with her 'keep to themselves' rule and it annoyed the heck out of Mulder. Not that he could really blame her. He'd been short with her that night at the hotel, effectively telling her he agreed not to talk about themselves. Now he regretted it. The gas stopped pumping. He evened off the amount then put the cap on and headed in to pay. When he got inside he saw Molly standing in front of the candy looking on longingly. He smiled and headed over to her. "What looks good?" he asked. "Everything," she replied. "Where's your mom?" "Powdering her nose." He smiled. "Why?" "She wants to look nice." "Why?" Molly just gave him a mischievous smile. He was amazed how alert and smart she was for her age. He knelt down beside her. "Well, I don't know what the food will be like when we get where we're going. Maybe we should pick up some dinner and something for breakfast tomorrow. But you know, I'm not very good at shopping. Think you can help?" She turned and smiled at him, nodding excitedly. He took her hand and they set about getting dinner and breakfast. She started to head for the cashier but his voice stopped her. "Hey, what about dessert?" She turned and smiled at him then ran over to the candy aisle. They each picked out some treats. "What does your mom like?" he asked, scanning the various items. "She doesn't like junk food." He smiled. "But . . ." Molly looked up and grinned then whispered conspiratorially, "But she really likes Snickers and Snickers ice cream bars." He smiled and whispered back. "Well, we don't have a freezer in the car for the ice cream but maybe you should grab a couple of Snickers bars." Molly grinned and grabbed two then they moved over to the cashier. While Mulder was paying Dana came out and Molly ran over to her. When they weren't looking Mulder grabbed a few more items he saw on display by the cash register and placed them with their other purchases. He and the clerk just finished bagging the items when Dana came over carrying Molly. "Ready?" he asked. She nodded and they headed out. She noted the two grocery bags he carried. "Bought enough?" "Better safe than sorry. We lost a lot of good stuff back when we were chased down." What he didn't tell her was the last time he talked to Skinner he found out the car had been ransacked and beat to a pulp by the time the other agents showed up to get it. Someone had obviously hoped to find some clues to their whereabouts from it. Also, the agents from the safehouse had been found shot to death in the woods. Dana put Molly in the back seat as Mulder put away the groceries. He started to get in the car when she stopped him. "Want me to drive?" He looked at her surprised. "You don't know the way." "You could tell me. You've been driving for nearly three days straight. I just thought you might want a break." "I don't know . . ." She turned away angrily. "Look, I was just trying to help_" He stopped her with a hand on her arm before she could storm off to the passenger side. Then he dropped the keys into her hand. ************************************* "Turn right up here," Mulder said, pulling himself from sleep, pointing through the darkness. Dana made the turn and headed up the long driveway. Soon it opened up into a wide clearing in the trees. She couldn't see it much in the dark, but what she did see, with the help of a full moon, told her this house was huge. The was a large wrap around porch and the second story had a full balcony. A small part of her couldn't wait until morning to see their new surroundings and get the full effect of the immense mountain cabin. She parked the car and turned to look at Mulder. A hand lay across his eyes as he leaned back against the seat. She could hear his deep breathing and realized he'd fallen asleep again. As gently as she could she moved his hand to his lap to get a better look at him. She could slightly make out the light bags under his eyes. His brow was creased in worry or sadness, she wasn't sure which. As she watched him sleeping there she felt a sudden pang of guilt. She'd been nothing but rude to him this whole time. It wasn't his fault. Any of it. It's just she'd learned be careful after all she and Molly had been through. She couldn't risk not being careful. But that didn't mean she had to take it out on a perfect stranger who was only doing his job. Here he was risking his life to protect her and her daughter and all she could do was chew him out. However, she got the distinct feeling he enjoyed getting on her nerves. Nevertheless, she vowed to be more civil with him, at least. Very gently she reached out and brushed back a lock of hair from his forehead. She had to admit he was very attractive. He stirred slightly but didn't wake up. "Agent Mulder," she said softly. He jerked suddenly. "We're here." He sat up and nodded, rubbing a hand over his eyes. "You get Molly. I'll get the bags." That done, they headed up to the house. Mulder reached up and moved aside a wall hanging and removed a key. He unlocked the door and let them inside. After closing the door behind them he headed upstairs. Dana followed, taking in what she could in the dark. At the top of the stairs he led them down the hall to the right and went in the first room on the right. "This can be Molly's room unless you want to keep her with you," he whispered. She took in the frilly curtains, child's canopy bed, dresser, vanity and the various stuffed animals that filled the corners and chairs. "I think I'll keep her with me. Just for tonight." He nodded and moved to the next room. This room had a larger canopy bed with a thick scarlet comforter, matching pillows and curtains. It also had a vanity, dresser, and a large oak trunk at the foot of the bed. Mulder set the bag on the trunk. "I'll see you in the morning. I'll be in the next room down past the bathroom if you need me." She nodded and he turned to go. "Agent Mulder." He turned back at the door. "Yeah?" She was silent a moment before she spoke. "Thank you. For everything." He merely watched her before nodding and saying goodnight. Then he closed the door behind him. Dana sighed then worked on getting herself and the sleeping Molly to bed. ************************************* Mulder stood outside the door to the bedroom he'd just exited until the light went out. He'd been surprised by the sincerity he'd heard in her voice. 'Must be lack of sleep,' he thought, then chided himself for it. He'd promised to be nicer to her. Trying to put her out of his mind, he went about checking the house and making sure it was all locked up. Then he headed to bed but not before he paused for a moment outside her door. Shaking his head he moved on to get some rest. ************************************* Dana was surprised when she awoke the next morning and Molly was still asleep beside her. This whole ordeal must be taking a lot out of her as well. Quietly, so as not to wake her, Dana crawled out of bed and headed downstairs to the kitchen where Mulder must be making breakfast by the smell of it. The house was as beautiful as she'd imagined it last night. She entered the large and spacious kitchen. "Agent Mulder?" But no one was there. Some eggs and sausage were cooking on the stove, adding to what looked like a breakfast large enough to feed fifty people. Confused, Dana tightened her robe around her and headed off in search of the FBI agent. "Agent Mulder?" She stopped when she heard sounds coming from a room off the entryway. She moved over to the slightly ajar door. She pushed it open calling, "Agent Mulder, I just_" She stopped when the person looked up from rummaging through the desk drawer. It wasn't Mulder. The man was large. Fearing he was one of Luccini's men having found them, but not knowing how that was possible, she started to back up but screamed when she bumped into another large figure that trapped her in his arms. Suddenly the house was filled with shouts of surprise, feet stampeded towards them. Dana elbowed her captor in the stomach and pushed him away. She grabbed the nearest weapon she could find, a small statue, and backed up against the wall as she was surrounded by an army of about eight tree sized men, some pointing guns at her. "Who are you?" she yelled. "Stay back! Molly! Agent Mulder!" Where were they? Were they hurt? "Mommy?" came Molly's scared voice. "Molly!" Scully watched the barricade of men wondering how she'd get out of this. Then she heard his voice. "Guys! Guys, put your guns down! Back off!" Through the crowd came Mulder holding Molly. As he set Molly down, Dana sighed in relief, near tears and ran into his arms. He stood surprised but held her until she calmed down. Realizing what she was doing she pulled back suddenly. "You okay?" he asked, cupping her cheek. She nodded and pushed his hand away. He smiled. "I guess I should have warned you." Dana said nothing as she picked Molly up and stepped back to look at her 'attackers'. They'd all relaxed now. "What is going on down here?" came a older woman's voice from the kitchen. The men parted to let a 4'8" tall woman through. Dana had no way of determining the woman's age. It could've been anywhere from 50 to 100. she radiated kindness and an amazing strength despite the white hair and soft aged skin. Her eyes held a youthful spark of mischief. The woman stopped when she saw Mulder and a huge grin covered her face. "Fox!" Mulder smiled and moved to hug the woman. "Hey, Ruby." "My boy! When did you get in?" "Around midnight last night." "Why didn't you wake me?" "I didn't know if you all were even here. I thought you might've been on your yearly overnight hike. Besides, you need your rest." "Oh, hush! You let me worry about myself, okay?" She looked towards Dana and Molly. "You've got enough to worry about." She watched Dana look around worriedly and her face softened for this young mother. Ruby turned to the men surrounding them. She glared at seeing the guns some of them held. She snatched one from the closest. "What have I told you all about guns in my house?" "They aren't loaded," the man said. "We heard a woman scream and_" "I don't want to hear none of that. All right you boys. Everyone move out. Breakfast will be ready in about 15 minutes. I want you all washed up and dressed by then. You know the rules. Go on now." Quietly mumbling to each other they headed out. Mulder turned to Dana who was trying very hard not to break down. "Dr. Scully, I'm sorry. I should've_" "Don't!" she said glaring at him as she back towards the stairs. "Don't even . . ." Then with Molly in her arms she flew up the stairs and slammed the door to her room. Mulder turned at the tsking sound from Ruby. "What?" he asked defensively. Ruby just shook her head and headed up the stairs. ************************************* Dana paced back and forth across the room as Molly was in the bathroom brushing her teeth. She sat on the bed trying to calm herself. What had he brought them to? A house full of large and rough mountain men? What was he thinking? And why hadn't he warned her? When they got in last night she'd assumed the house was empty, but it appeared these men lived around here and came often. She looked up at the sudden knock on her door and she scowled. "Go away, Agent Mulder." The muffled voice surprised her. "It's not Fox, dear." Warily, Dana moved to door and opened it to reveal Ruby. Then she moved to sit on the bed. Ruby closed the door and came to join her. "I'm sorry, for how I acted," Dana said. "I assume this is your house and it was very rude of me to_" "You be quiet now. You had every right to react as you did. I'm sure you didn't expect quite a welcoming." Dana looked at the woman and couldn't help but laugh at herself. "Don't you worry yourself about it. Fox should've told you what to expect. Anyway, he's told me about your situation and we're only too glad to have you. It's what I do with my life, take in those who need it. And I guarantee once you get to know these boys you'll never feel safer. They take care of me and I take care of them. But I must say, it'll be nice to have another woman around. True I'm old enough to be your grandmother five times great," Dana smiled at the exaggeration, "but a woman is a woman and I could use the company after all these boys." "Thank you . . ." "Ruby." "Ruby. We won't be in the way_" "You hush. You're a breath a fresh air in this testosterone filled environment." Dana chuckled and Ruby smiled. "Like I said, breakfast will be ready soon. If you'd prefer to eat alone_" "No, that's okay. Thank you. But I get the feeling we may be here awhile and we might as well join the crowd on this one. I don't want to put you out_" "You won't." "Still, we'll just join you." "Whatever you wish. We'll see you in a few minutes then." Dana nodded and Ruby left. Once the door was closed Ruby couldn't help but smile to herself. ************************************* Ten minutes later Molly and Dana came downstairs. All talk at the table stopped as they entered and everyone turned to watch them. Now the large breakfast made sense. Dana felt very self conscious but squared her shoulders as she spotted three empty chairs at the head of the table where Ruby sat. She headed over and took a seat, setting Molly next to her and Ruby. One of the men started to dish up but stopped when Ruby narrowed her gaze at him. He pulled his hands back sheepishly. They sat a moment in silence, until Molly couldn't take it. "What are we waiting for?" Dana looked embarrassed but everyone else smiled. Ruby held out a hand to the little girl. Molly grinned and took it then held out her hand to her mother. Soon everyone joined hands and bowed their heads. Then Ruby's old velvety voice filled the silence. "Dear father, bless this food we've been so blessed to receive. We thank thee for our health and home. Bless those less fortunate and help us do that which pleases thee. Amen." Then came the chorus of 'amen's' around the table and everyone dished up. Dana leaned over to Ruby. "Where, uh, where's Agent Mulder?" "Fox said he wasn't hungry and that he had some calls to make." "Oh." Ruby cocked an eyebrow at the disappointment in Dana's voice, but said nothing. The conversation came from everyone but Dana. She sat silently picking at her food answering only once in awhile to confirm what Molly said. She glanced around the table lost in thought when a movement outside caught her attention. She saw Mulder on the edge of the yard out the glass backdoors. "Would you excuse me?" she said. She was surprised when all the men stopped and stood as she left. She made her way outside unaware of the ten pairs of eyes watching her. ************************************* "Agent Mulder." Mulder turned at the voice and saw Dana approaching him. He glanced around for an escape but realized it had to happen sooner or later so he stood his ground. "Look, Dr. Scully, I'm sorry I didn't tell you_" "No. Don't." She took a deep breath. "I'm the one who should be sorry. You've done nothing but risk your life for us and all I've done is chew you out for it. I guess I'm not very good at trusting people_" He stepped closer and laid a gentle hand on her arm. "No one should expect you to after all you've been through." They both looked down at his hand and he pulled it away awkwardly. "Anyway," she said. "I'm sorry. I really am grateful for all you've done. And I'm sorry I've been so cold." "Well, we didn't exactly start off on the right foot. I didn't mean to sound so harsh that first day. I was surprised. I don't do well with kids." "You seem to do just fine," Dana said and smiled up at him. He smiled back. "Well, Molly's different. What do you say we call a truce. Start over." He stuck out his hand. "Fox Mulder. I'll be your personal bodyguard for the next little while." She smiled shyly, as she took his hand. "Dana Scully. My daughter Molly and I couldn't feel safer." They held hands a moment longer than necessary as they watched each other. Finally she pulled her hand away and he instantly missed it. "Well, uh, Ruby has made quite a breakfast. You going to join us?" she asked. He smiled. "Yeah." They turned and started back for the house. ************************************* "I think Fox likes your mommy and vice versa," Ruby said as Mulder and Dana headed back towards the house. Molly rolled her eyes and smiled. "You have no idea." Then she dug into her eggs. ************************************* "You know, Ruby would be famous for her pancakes and waffles." "Would be?" "Yeah, if she let herself get attention. She prefers to stay in 'hiding'. Makes her job easier and the people that come here feel better that no one knows this place exists." Dana nodded, smiling, then stopped as she looked up. "What?" Mulder asked. He followed her gaze to see the occupants of the dining room were a little too interested in their meal after looking quickly away when the pair noticed them watching. The duo shared a smile before continuing on. Mulder and Dana entered the back doors and smiled at the expectant looks. The men around the table stood. "I guess we should make the introductions formal," Mulder said. "Dr. Dana Scully, Molly. This is Ruby, Adam, Randy, Mike, Frank, Caleb, Jake, Derek, and the little one on the end there is Brad." Dana couldn't help but laugh. First of all, 'little one' meant he had 24" biceps instead of 25" and was maybe 26 years old instead of what looked to range about 28-67 years old. And second, even Brad was bigger than Mulder, though Mulder was in no way scrawny. "Guys, this is Dana Scully and her daughter, Molly. They'll be staying with us for a while," Mulder said finishing introductions. "It's nice to meet you," Dana said. "Momma, they look like wrestlers!" Molly cried out suddenly. Dana blushed. Everyone else laughed. "Well, actually," Adam, the oldest of them all, said to Molly with a wink, "some of us have done some wrestling. But we prefer the term 'amateur body slammers'." Mulder and Dana took their seats and breakfast continued. ************************************* After breakfast was over, Mulder went upstairs to unpack the few things he had. As he was going through the bag he found something he'd forgotten about. He pulled the items out then headed out of his room. ************************************* "Oh! Mommy, this room is so pretty!" Molly said as she hurried over to the bed. "It's for me?" "For as long as we stay here," Dana said nodding. Ruby smiled from the doorway. "This used to be my granddaughter's room when she was little." "Where's she now?" Molly asked. "Oh, she's all grown up. She lives in Georgia now with her husband and little boy." "Dr. Scully? Molly?" The three ladies turned at the sound of Mulder's voice coming down the hall. He stopped at the door. "Oh, there you are." Ruby smiled. "I've got some work to do." She left. "Mulder, look at my pretty room!" Molly said excited. "Yes. It's very pretty. Perfect for a little girl like you." Mulder looked at Dana then smiled at Molly. "Hey, Molly. I got something for you." "What is it?" "Close your eyes and put out your hands." Molly did as directed and Mulder placed the book and box of crayons in her hands. Molly opened her eyes and smiled at the coloring book and crayons. "For me?" "You probably won't need it now that you've got eight guys who love to teach people new things around but I figure if you ever got bored of them you might want to practice your artistic skills." "Momma, look!" Molly ran over to her mother with her treasures. "Mulder got me a butterfly coloring book!" "Yes, I see. Did you thank him?" "Thank you, Mulder." "You're welcome, Molly." "I'm gonna go outside and start right now! Excuse me!" Then Molly was gone out the door. "You didn't have to do that," Dana said. "I know." She watched him a moment before nodding and heading out into the hall. Mulder quickly followed. "Hey. Don't you want to see what I got you?" She stopped and looked at him surprised. "What?" He smiled. "My mother always taught me to be polite and make sure I had enough for everybody." "You didn't_" "_have to do that," he finished for her. "I know. Here." He handed her the paperback book he held. "I didn't know what you like but I took a chance." Dana held the book and just stared at it, then up at him. She started to hand it back. "I can't accept this_" "Oh come on. It's not like it's a diamond necklace or something. It's from a gas station convenience store. I just thought you'd enjoy something to read. Besides, you try to give it back and you'll offend me," he finished with a smile. She smiled back. "Thank you. This is one of my favorite authors, actually." "Good." They stood a moment in awkward silence. "Well . . ." he said. "Well . . ." With a nod he turned and headed back to his room. ************************************* Over the next few weeks things were calm. Mulder and Dana had become more civil with one another, even enjoying one another's company, often sitting and talking for hours after Molly when to bed. All the guys took to Molly like eight big brothers; teaching her to fish and swim and anything else they knew. Brad, who'd taken a special liking to her, even taught her how to fight, sort of. Dana was none to pleased by this and Brad immediately apologized. She smiled and forgave him because he looked almost heartbroken until she did. It was obvious Ruby wasn't the only one that enjoyed the new guests. Mulder had called Skinner informing him of their whereabouts and then the three of them fell into daily life at the cabin. Everyday chores were done by one and all. Ruby had told Dana it wasn't necessary but Dana insisted. And Dana's medical expertise came in handy quite often. There were no serious emergencies but she repaired her fair share of sprained wrists and ankles, and stitched up several cuts. All in all, things went well. And as the time passed Mulder and Dana grew more and more comfortable with one another. ************************************* Mulder stood in the middle of the small clearing of trees, checking his gun when he heard Brad's voice. "Dana." Mulder turned to see Brad jog over to where Dana was just coming from the lake. "Hey, Brad. What's up?" "I was wondering if you could help me. I'm taking some courses through the mail. I'm working on getting a college degree in architecture but I'm having trouble with my G.E.'s. Biology to be specific." "Sure, Brad." "Great! Can you help me after lunch?" "It's a date." Mulder almost burst out laughing at the thrill plastered on Brad's face. "Thanks a lot, Dana. You're the best." Then he surprised them all by wrapping her in a bear hug before jogging off in the direction of the house. Mulder waited until he disappeared before speaking. He turned back to his task. "Someone's got a crush." Dana looked up, having not noticed him there before. She smiled and came over. "What's that suppose to mean?" "It means 'Bradley' has the hots for a certain redheaded doctor." "Don't be ridiculous. He just wants help_" "Uh-huh. Sure." She sighed, placing her hands on her hips and giving up with a shake of her head. He decided to let her off the hook and glanced down noticing the book she held. It'd only been about two weeks and already the book he got her was looking a little worn. "I take it you like it," he said nodding towards the book. "Oh. Yes. Thank you again. I can't seem to put it down. I've read it nearly four times now." "Oh? Any particular reason?" She shrugged as she rolled the book over in her hands. "I guess I can identify with the woman in this book." "How so?" "Well, she's a doctor trying to make it in a man's world. I know what that's like. Med school was a nightmare. A lot of men, some of them teachers, tried to make deals on grades if I 'pleased' them." Mulder's eyes widened slightly. Dana laughed. "Luckily I learned to defend myself at a very young age and made sure every last one of them knew it." He nodded. "Good for you." He tried to keep the conversation light. She never opened up to him and he didn't want to discourage it. "Any other reasons you identify with the character?" She grew quiet and thoughtful, turning the book over I her hands as she spoke, not looking up. When she finally spoke it was slowly. "She doesn't know where she's going in life. Her work is very important to her but she wants a family also. She has a wonderful boyfriend but she's not sure he's what she wants." Dana seemed to kind of daze off in thought. "Hm." Mulder pretended to concentrate on checking his weapon. "What does she want?" "She wants what_ who she shouldn't want." She looked up at him. "Who she can't have." Mulder grew uncomfortable at the look she was giving him. It was almost as if she were looking right into him and not even realizing it. The realization came soon enough. She came out of it and blushed. She cleared her throat nervously. "What are you doing out here?" He held up his gun and pointed at the dummy about a hundred yards away. "Target practice." "Oh." "You wanna try?" She turned to him, surprised. "What?" "You wanna try to hit the target?" "Oh. No thanks." "Come on. There's nothing going on. Besides, you never know when it may come in useful." "I don't like guns." "Neither do I but if it's the difference between returning home at night or lying dead in a gutter I'll do it." She looked at him unsure. "Come on," he said. Finally she gave in, walked over to him and set down her book. He handed her the gun which she took awkwardly. He moved to stand behind her as he gave direction. "Okay, now this one packs quite a punch so set your feet, spread 'em slightly to give you more balance. That's good. Cup your left hand around your right to hold it steady. Now, set your sights on your target and fire away." Dana adjusted until she was comfortable then she pulled the trigger. She hadn't anticipated the impact enough and it sent her reeling back. The bullet headed high into the trees. Mulder caught her before she fell. "Told you." "Right." She straightened, pushing down the effect his touch had on her. "Try leaning into it when you fire. That'll hold you up against the pressure." Dana repositioned her stance and aimed again. She fired and still fell back into his arms but not as bad. This bullet hit a tree behind the target, just above the 'head'. "That's really good. You got really close that time." "The impact keeps throwing me off balance. This is a strong little thing." "Tell me about it. Here," he stepped closer until she was almost leaning against his chest. She tried to concentrate on the lesson, not the instructor. He raised her arms out positioning her aim. He held the gun with her. "Keep steady." Easy for him to say. He wasn't the amateur with a very attractive instructor's arms around him. Dana took a deep breath to calm herself. That was difficult with Mulder's breath on her ear as he leaned down to speak to her. "Now don't think about it too hard. Just see your target, aim, and fire. You ready?" "Yeah." "On three. One. Two. Three!" The deafening sound echoed in the silence of the woods. Slowly they lowered the gun and Dana stared in shock. Mulder smiled. "Bang. You got him." Dana moved over to see the bullet had hit the target head on. ************************************* Ruby was carrying a basket of flowers back from the lake when she heard the voices. She quietly moved to get a better look through the trees. "No, see you're holding it too tight," Mulder said. "I am not," Dana insisted. "Yes, you are. You're arms are too tense. You'll lose your balance again_" "Please. Let me do this. I made it last time." "Fine." He stepped back and folded his arms. Dana fired the gun. Mulder was right. The bullet went somewhere high up and she stumbled back into his ready arms. "Told you. Let me show you." He again stood behind her and held the gun up with her, aiming it. "Just relax. Don't tense up. You feel that?" She nodded. "Okay. Now fire. One. Two. Th_" BANG! Once again she hit the target head on. Mulder smiled. "Told you." She rolled her eyes. "Are you always right?" "99.9% of the time." "Oh brother." "Anyway, you're getting better." She turned her head to look at him. "Really?" "Yeah. Really," he said quietly. He stared at her intently for a moment before slowly bringing up one hand to gently brush back a lock of her hair. Dana closed her eyes as he ran his finger tips gently down her cheek. She opened her eyes to look at him. Then slowly he leaned in. She knew what was coming. Her eyes fell closed again as their lips brushed. They pulled back to watch each other a moment. Then Dana stepped away and handed back the gun. "Thanks for the lesson." Then she grabbed her book and headed back to the house. Ruby stood unnoticed in the trees, smiling. ************************************* Dana rolled over for the millionth time before glancing at the clock. 3:03 AM. She sighed in frustration. she ordered herself but to no avail. She'd spent many of the past nights unable to sleep. Thinking about him. Thinking about the kiss. Dana. But she couldn't help herself. She'd already fallen for him; real bad. she told herself. With a firm nod she rolled over to her side determined to sleep. Not two minutes later she opened her eyes again, but this time because she heard something. She waited, listening before it came again. she thought. Ever since they'd started this thing they'd both had their fair share. Quietly, she slipped out of bed and left her room. She headed straight for Molly's room but found her fast asleep, her face content. Dana started to tuck Molly in better when the sound came again. She finished up, kissed Molly's head before heading out. Out in the hall she waited and turned when she heard the moan again. It was coming from Mulder's room. She headed over to his door and hesitated but the moan came again sending her into motion. She knocked softly. "Mulder?" Her only answer was another pain filled moan. Growing concerned she quietly pushed the door open. She peeked in to see Mulder tossing back and forth. she thought. She moved into the room over to stand next to his bed and was shocked to see him covered in sweat and the blankets thrown around. She leaned in slightly hoping to awaken him without startling him too badly. "Mulder." She reached a hand slowly to his shoulder. "Mul_" As soon as her fingers grazed his skin he was up like a shot. "SAMANTHA!!" he yelled, startling her. "Mulder?" she said, again. His eyes flew to her and in seconds she was wrapped in his strong embrace as he breathed heavily. She could think of nothing else to do than hold him close, comforting him. "Shh. It's okay, Mulder. It's just a dream. It's all over," she murmured as she rubbed his back. He pulled back suddenly and held her by her shoulders looking at her confused. "Scully?" He'd never called her that before, but who was she to argue with a man who'd just had the worst nightmare she'd ever witnessed. "Yeah. It's me. You okay?" She ran her hand down the side of his face, watching him closely, unconsciously checking his pulse. Before another word could be spoken he pulled her to him and kissed her. She only seriously thought about pushing him away for about a second as her rational mind urged to get control of the situation, but soon her heart took over and she was kissing him back just a furiously. But it didn't last. Soon that nagging little voice in the back of her mind dug it's way through enough for her to realize what she was doing. She pulled away suddenly and they just stared at each other, gasping for breath. "Scully . . ." he whispered. At that she ran out of his room. ************************************* Several Days Later Neither one mentioned that night. And while on the inside they were both thoroughly confused, they managed to outwardly act as they always had. "Molly, keep your eyes closed," Mulder ordered as Dana carried her down the hall to the kitchen. "Mulder, what's going on?" Dana asked. He just smiled. As they reached the door he stopped her. "You close your eyes, too." "What?" "Do it." "Come on, Mommy!" Molly begged. "I wanna see the surprise!" Dana sighed and closed her eyes. Then she felt the gentle pressure of Mulder's hands on her shoulders and she couldn't help but notice how close he was standing behind her. Then he pushed open the door and led them in. "Okay. Open them." "SURPRISE!" Dana and Molly looked on wide eyed at the candle lit cake and pile of gifts on the table. The guys and Ruby started singing. "Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday, dear Molly! Happy birthday to you!" Molly laughed happily, clapping and quickly wriggled from her mother's arms. Dana turned to Mulder, her eyes questioning. He shrugged. "I saw it in her file. We couldn't very well let her miss a birthday because of the bad guys in the world." Dana looked over to see Molly happily hugging all the guys and she couldn't help the tears that started to fill her eyes. Mulder noticed and became concerned. "Dr. Scully? What's wrong?" She shook her head and smiled. "Would you excuse me?" Then she turned and hurried out the back door. Mulder watched her go, confused. He turned at the hand on his shoulder. Ruby stood next to him smiling gently up at him. "What's wrong with Dana?" Brad asked getting everyone's attention. Mulder just shrugged, unsure what to say. Ruby gave him a gentle shove and motioned for him to go after her. ************************************* Dana stood at the edge of the yard trying to force down her tears. She froze when she heard a twig snap behind her. She spun around to see Mulder's silhouette in the darkness, the light from the house behind him. He held his hands up in surrender. "Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you." "You didn't," she said and sniffed. He came up to her. "Did I offend you in some way? I'm sorry, I just thought_" "No. No, it's not that. I . . . thank you . . . for doing that for her. I'm ashamed to say I'd forgotten_" "Understandable_" "No, it's not," she said irritated. "It's not understandable for a mother to forget her child's birthday." "Dr. Scully_" She sighed, tiredly. "Just 'Dana.' Please. Let's dispense with the formalities." "Okay. Dana," he said sounding unsure. "Is that what's bothering you? That you forgot?" "No. Yes. I don't know. Partially. I just . . . I keep wondering if this will ever end . . . and if I want it to." "Excuse me?" She looked up suddenly, realizing what she'd said. "Nothing. Never mind. I'm just tired is all." She turned away, looking into the forest gathering her thoughts. "Thank you, Mulder. For all you've done. And for bringing us here. I'll admit I had my doubts when we first got here but Ruby and the guys have been wonderful and . . ." She turned and smiled at him shrugging her shoulders because there was nothing more she could say. "Thank you." "You're welcome." They stood in silence unsure what to say, if anything at all. They'd felt things changing ever since they'd come to a truce that first day here. Mulder didn't want to admit he was starting to really like the good doctor. And Dana didn't want to admit she was developing feelings for her assigned bodyguard. He nodded his head to the side and they headed over to the swinging bench a few feet away. They sat down. "I, uh, read some of your file, too." She froze. "Oh?" "Yeah. You didn't tell me you were once involved with Luccinni." She looked up suddenly then back down at her hands. "It was a long time ago. Besides, I said your questions would be answered by 'my file'." "How'd it happen?" She sat quietly. "You show me yours, I'll show you mine," he said. He had no intention of telling her anything, hoping she'd forget and just spill her guts. She looked up and watched him carefully. Finally she started, very softly. "I knew Tony in high school. He was a leader of gangs even back then, but I thought I knew him better. My parents hated him, big surprise. I, being the all knowing teenager I was, insisted that he was just misunderstood. Turns out I was the one that misunderstood him." Mulder watched her carefully but said nothing as she relayed her hurtful past to him. "After high school he insisted I go to college. Said he 'didn't want no moron for a wife'." She looked over at Mulder's shocked look and smiled sadly. "Yeah, I thought I was going to marry him. I agreed to go to school because I liked learning and I'd always dreamed of becoming a doctor. When I got back he said we'd get married but it never happened. He was too busy with 'business'. That and I wasn't presentable enough to go before a priest to be married what with a black eye the shape of Tony's fist every few weeks." Mulder felt the anger radiate off of her as she spoke. He felt his own anger rising at the man who'd hurt this woman. "I hung around for awhile working for his father. All the while I learned more and more things I never wanted to know about Antonio Luccini and his family. Then something happened that made up my mind to get out. I snuck away one night and went to Harry, Harrison Manning. He didn't want to, but he owed me, so he hid me then got me a job at his company. He never told Tony where I was. I heard through the grapevine that Tony was furious. I wasn't surprised after all I'd learned about him and his family when working for his father. Anyway, I never looked back." Mulder watched her with sadness in his eyes. "What made you decide to leave?" Dana turned and looked at him. He could see the indecision in her eyes. She glanced at the house. "Five years and nine months ago I got pregnant." She said nothing more and Mulder's eyes widened in shock. "Molly?" he said quietly. She nodded. Of all the things Mulder had thought he'd learn tonight, this was not even close. "Does . . . does he know?" he asked trying to get a handle on all this. She shook her head. "Does Molly?" "No. I couldn't tell her." He could hear the tears in her soft voice. "She thinks her father died in a car accident. I just . . . I couldn't bear to tell her who her father is and why he does what he does." She looked at him and her face crumbled. And for the first time, Fox Mulder saw just how vulnerable and scared the tough and strong willed Dr. Scully was. He hesitantly pulled her into his arms and was surprised when she didn't pull away. Instead she wrapped her arms around him and cried into his shoulder soaking his T-shirt. He gently rubbed her back until her sobs faded. Finally she pulled back wiping away her tears. "I'm sorry. I . . . it's been awhile since I've talked about this. And I never breakdown like this. I have to be strong for Molly_" He rubbed her upper arms. "It's okay. You can't keep it all bottled up_" She smiled. "You sound like a psychiatrist." He smiled back. "Psychologist, actually. Oxford grad. Recruited by the FBI." She smiled and looked down embarrassed at being so emotional. "Well, anyway. That's my story. Thank you for letting me share. It feels good to tell someone. Even Scott doesn't know the whole story." "Yeah. Scott." Mulder uncomfortably pulled away and leaned back in his seat. "How long have you known him?" She leaned back as well and shrugged. "Awhile. He was a police officer back then. He was the one that first took my statement the first time Tony . . . got really mad at me. I didn't press charges, of course. I was too afraid. Some homeless man found me in an alley. To this day I don't know how I got there. Scott took care of me until Tony showed up acting all concerned. I didn't see Scott again until Molly was about two. He was at a party that Harry was throwing. He's been around ever since." "When I saw you two at headquarters you seemed . . . distant." She sighed. "Scott . . . has told me he loves me. And I believe him." "But you don't feel the same." "Don't get me wrong. I do love him. He's done so much for me and Molly. But . . . I don't feel about him the way he feels about me. He's . . . more like a dear close cousin." "Ouch. Don't ever tell him that." "That's the problem. I should've told him that a long time ago. It's wrong to lead him on like this. I actually thought I could come to love him in that way. But I don't. Maybe it's because I've tried to be careful ever since Tony. Too careful." "Do you think you'll ever find someone else?" "I don't know. Maybe Scott is the one. Maybe it'll just take longer. Then again, maybe there's not suppose to be anyone else. Maybe I'm just supposed to get out of this alive, raise Molly and be alone for the rest of my life." "I doubt that." She turned, surprised by the surety in his voice. "Why do you say that?" "Because. You're not the type of woman that dies an old maid. You're the type that gets what she wants and deserves out of life." She sat back touched by his sincerity. "I thought my type was uptight?" she teased, with a smile. He smiled and winced. "Yeah, uh, about that. I'm sor_" "Uh-uh. No more 'I'm sorries'. I've had just about enough of those, thank you very much. Besides, I can't fault you for being honest." "Sure you could." They shared a smile. "So? You seem to know so much. What do I want and deserve out of life?" she asked. It was a moment or two before he answered surprising her. "You want exactly what you said at the motel. Home. Family." He paused. "Love." She turned at his tone. "And you deserve everything you wish for." Her eyes bored into his and she was very aware they were getting physically closer to one another. "And . . . why's that, exactly?" His hand came up to cup her cheek. Both hearts pounding furiously. "Because you are the kindest, strongest, bravest woman I've ever met. And you of all people deserve all you can get out of this sad life." Her eyes closed just as she felt his breath on her lips. She almost felt his lips on hers when_ "Momma! Come quick! You have to see the doll Brad made for me!" Mulder and Dana jumped apart quickly, both blushing in the darkness. "Coming, sweetie!" Dana's eyes locked with Mulder's for just an instant before she stood and hurried to the house. Mulder leaned back sighing and silently chiding himself for his inappropriate behavior. ************************************* Dana studiously avoided Mulder's gaze when he came in as she only half listened to Molly's excited chatter about the gifts she'd received. "Okay," Ruby said. "Next is cake and ice cream." "Hold on," Mulder said forcing a smile. He moved over to one of the drawers, pulled out a video cassette, and held it up. "We've got one more gift. Why don't we dish up our food and head into the Rec Room." Everyone shared looks then agreed. When they were all settled in front of the TV Mulder popped the tape in. They waited as the tape started. Molly gasped happily when she saw her classmates from school along with her teacher. "Hi, Molly. We were sorry you weren't here so we could celebrate but your friend Mulder said we should do this and he could get it to you. Ready kids?" Everyone began laughing as Molly's entire kindergarten class began a very loud and off key rendition of the Beatles birthday song. "Happy birthday, Molly!" the class cheered when they'd finished then they all began throwing confetti and running around yelling. Mulder stopped the tape as everyone's laughs died down. He smiled, handing a card made of construction paper to Molly. "Miss Cooper also had all the kids sign this for you." Molly grinned and threw her arms around Mulder's neck. "Thank you, Mulder!" She hurried off to show her card to the rest of her new friends. Dana moved to stand next to Mulder at the edge of the room. They both watched the group silently. "That was very nice of you, Mulder." He shrugged as if it were no big deal. "Like I said no kid should miss a birthday." Dana hesitated only a moment before quickly giving him a kiss on the cheek. Then she hurried out to the kitchen as Mulder stared after her a smile forming on his face. ************************************* "Okay, everyone," Ruby said after they'd all brought their dishes to the kitchen. "Tonight is our monthly talent meeting. Those of you who have something to share can do so. Show us what you made, tell us what you did, or even perform for us. I know Adam, Randy and Mike have a song they've been practicing. So we'll meet out back in half an hour. Jake, Derek and Frank, will you help me set up the chairs?" They nodded and she led them out back. Adam, Randy and Mike headed off to practice. Brad and Caleb took Molly to show her something. That left just Dana and Mulder. "Nice," Mulder said. "We get stuck with the dishes." Dana smiled. "I'll wash, you dry." They set about clearing the table. They worked quietly for awhile but Mulder could tell Dana had something on her mind. "Go ahead," he said, surprising her. "What?" "You've got something on your mind. What is it?" "Oh. Nothing. It's not important." He folded his arms and just watched her until she gave in. "Well, it's just . . . you didn't show me yours." he thought. He turned back to his work, feigning ignorance. "What do you mean?" "Now don't start that. I told you my sordid past. What's yours?" He was silent a moment. "What do you already know?" She shrugged. "Not much. You have an uncanny ability to solve strange cases. You requested your assignment on something called 'the X-Files' because you believe in aliens and alien abductions. You had a promising career until you found these files." He took the dishes he'd gathered to the kitchen. "What more do you want to know?" She followed him in. "The truth. And what else your keeping back. I know there must be more than that. Especially after the other night." He looked up surprised. That was the first either had even mentioned what had happened but he could see she had no intention of discussing what had happened after he'd woken up. He set down his dishes then, after a moment, turned to her. "I have a sister, Samantha. When I was twelve and she was eight our parents went to a neighbors house one night. When they came home . . . I was the only child they had left." Dana's brow furrowed in confusion. "I don't understand." "My sister was kidnapped. They never found her." "Oh my . . ." Dana was shocked. How horrible to be a young child and lose your only sibling like that. "But I don't understand. What does that have to do with your work." He said nothing as he watched her and slowly she caught on. "You think . . . you think aliens took her." "I think men in our government are working on a conspiracy. I think they took my sister to keep my father, who was working with them, quiet." He just stood there watching her. "And you think I'm crazy." She looked up at him gathering her thoughts. Then she stood and moved over to him laying a gentle hand on his arm, choosing her words carefully. "I think . . . that you are a very unique man who hasn't gotten over what happened to him as a child. I'll tell you what I don't think, and this may sound crazy in it's self, but I don't think you're crazy. And I don't think you're a liar. That's what I think." Then she offered him a smile and got to work on the dishes. ************************************* "Our final act tonight is three musically inclined men. Okay, boys," Ruby said. "The stage is yours." She took a seat and everyone applauded as Jim, Mike and Adam moved to the front of the half circle. Mike stepped forward. "For your listening pleasure tonight, we've prepared a little number called 'In A Vine Covered Shack'." Their audience applauded. Adam gave them the note and they began to sing accapela in perfect harmony. The song was a simple tune that reminded Dana of stories her great grandma used to tell her about living in the early West. /In a vine covered shack in the mountains Bravely fighting the battles of time There's a dear one who sacrificed sorrow He's that silver haired daddy of mine If I could recall all the heartache Dear old daddy I've caused you to bear If I could erase Those lines from your face And bring back the gold to your hair If God would but grant me the power Just to turn back those pages of time I would give all I own If I could but atone To that silver haired daddy of mine/ Their audience burst into applause. ************************************* Mulder was passing Molly's room to get to his when he noticed the door was open slightly and soft voices came from inside. He couldn't resist the urge and moved over to listen. He peeked in to see them in much the same position he'd found them that first night almost a month ago. "Did you have a good birthday, honey?" "Oh, yes, Mommy! It was very lovely." Dana chuckled. "I'm sorry we couldn't do it like we usually do." "That's okay. This was great! Brad's doll is so cute! And I loved the video from my class. And Caleb's song was funny!" she giggled. "Yeah, it was wasn't it. I'm sorry I forgot this year, Molly." "It's okay. You've got a lot on your mind." Dana smiled and smoothed back the child's curls. "Oh, Molly. You're growing up too fast on me." "I'm sorry." "Don't be. You're turning out better than I imagined. I love you. So much." "I love you, too, Mommy." Dana kissed her. "Goodnight." "Night." Mulder stepped back as Dana stood to leave but stopped at Molly's voice. "Mommy?" "Yeah?" "Will you tell Mulder to come say goodnight?" Dana paused. "I'll see what I can do." She started for the door again and Mulder backed up, hoping to make it look like he'd just come up the stairs. "Oh, hey," he said when she came out. "Hi," she answered, looking like a cornered mouse. "I was just on my way to bed. How's Molly?" "Fine. She, uh, wants you to say goodnight." "Oh. Okay." He moved towards the door. Dana stepped out of his way but they were still very close and it had quite an effect on both of them. He opened the door and stepped inside, going over to kneel by the bed. "Hey, Molly." "Hi." "How you doing?" "Good. Thanks for the birthday party. I'm five now." "Yes, I know. And what a lovely five year old you are." Molly giggled as Mulder tickled her neck. "You ready to go to sleep?" he asked. "Yep." "You know what my mom used to say to me every night when I was little?" "What?" "Goodnight. Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite. And if they do just take your shoe and beat 'em 'til they're black and blue." Molly giggled and Mulder smiled. "Goodnight, Molly." "Goodnight, Mulder." He started to stand to leave but was shocked when she sat up and threw her arms around his neck. "I love you," she said, as she held on tight. Mulder hesitantly hugged her back. "I . . . love you, too, Molly." Then she laid back and he tucked her in. He turned out the light and made a quick escape, closing the door softly behind him. 'Where'd that come from?' he wondered. He wasn't the only one. "What was that about?" He jumped, startled, and turned to see Dana glaring at him. "Geeze! You scared me," he said. "Did I just hear what I think I heard?" "Look, Dana_" "Don't 'Dana' me. I shouldn't have to tell you how inappropriate that was_" Not wanting to wake up anyone else he steered her towards his room. "What did you want me to say?" he asked as he closed the door. "I don't know but certainly not that." "Why?" "Why?" "Yeah, why?" he asked again, getting angry himself. "It's very obvious why. In case you hadn't noticed, my daughter is getting very attached to you, Agent Mulder." "And?" "And . . . you shouldn't lead her on so. After this is over she'll be heart broken when you leave." He folded his arms. "And what makes you think I'll leave when this is over." "What?" "You heard me." "You can't be serious." "I've never been so serious in my life. Here's a news flash, Dr. Scully. I'm becoming quite fond of your daughter as well." He paused. "And she's not the only one I'm becoming fond of." Her head snapped around suddenly as she looked at him sharply. "What did you say?" "Scully," he said tiredly, "you're not deaf so I'd appreciate not having to repeat myself when we both know you heard me." She was so angry she hardly noticed he'd called her 'Scully' again. "Why you arrogant, self-important _" "Very mature. Name calling. I thought we'd passed that phase." She nearly exploded. She hadn't been this upset with him since the first hotel. "Get out," she hissed. "This is my room." "I know!" Her face was red with anger before she stormed past him. He grabbed her arm stopping her. "Scully_" "Dr. Scully, if you don't mind." "Dr. Scully," he spat. "I was only being honest with her . . ." He let go of her arm. "And you." She stared at him a moment before fleeing to her own room. ************************************* Dana was the last to arrive at breakfast the next morning and no one was lost on the tension in the room as she took a seat. Half way through the meal Dana and Mulder became very childish. "Molly, could you ask Agent Mulder to pass the syrup," she asked in a tight voice not looking at anyone. Everyone watched in confusion. Mulder seethed quietly, watching her. "Molly, will you tell your mother that the syrup is right in front of her?" "Molly, tell Agent Mulder I'd like the blueberry syrup." "Tell your mom that there's a full thing of 'blueberry' syrup within arms reach of her." "Molly, tell Agent Mulder mommy wants to finish off the other one so as not to end up with two half filled jars." "Molly, tell 'mommy' she's being childish." "Childish!" Dana exclaimed. "Yes, childish. And while she's at it she could work on her manners." Dana stood angrily. "Manners! This coming from the man who doesn't know appropriate behavior towards his job assignment. Who tries to seduce the woman he's supposed to be protecting." Mulder stood as well facing off with her across the table. " Seduce?? First of all, this 'man' didn't try to seduce anyone. The woman did nothing to stop that kiss. And second, this 'man' didn't want the job assignment in the first place." "Then maybe he should've refused or asked for another one." "He had another one, but his uptight boss 'informed' him he had a new assignment." "Oh, just cry about it, why doesn't he?" "'Up tight boss'. Hm, this 'man' seems to remember a discussion he and 'mommy' had in that first hotel about uptight people. He thinks 'mommy' and this uptight boss would be perfect for each other. Then again what about poor Scott? She's still gotta deal with him, doesn't she?" "You, son of a_" "Dana!" Ruby yelled suddenly. Mulder and Dana glared at one another but looked vary ashamed at Ruby. "I don't know what has gotten into you two but I'd appreciate you calming down and handling this like adults. Preferably in another room." "There's nothing to discuss," Dana seethed. "Not when you're being a child," Mulder said. "Agent Mulder, that first day I said we should keep to ourselves. Let's stick to that, okay?" "Fine!" "Fine!" Then they both stormed off in opposite directions slamming doors behind them. ************************************* Ruby entered the billiard room to find Dana furiously throwing darts at a board. She made nearly every shot. Ruby silently took a seat and waited. A few minutes later Dana sighed in frustration and shame and took a seat next to her. "Ruby . . . I'm sor_" "Don't you be apologizing to me." Dana looked up at her. "But I behaved horribly_" "To Fox." "Ogh! That man! He drives me insane! I'm sorry, Ruby. I know you two are very close but . . . have you ever noticed he can be the most aggravating, self-centered, mean man on the planet?" "Yes. He's a regular pain in the butt." Dana was surprised by Ruby's bluntness. "But . . . he can also be the sweetest, most considerate man on the planet when he wants to." Dana sighed in disgust and shook her head, turning away. "You wanna tell me about it?" Ruby asked. "He's behaved very inappropriately." "How so?" "Last night," she started slowly, "Molly asked him to come say goodnight. Before he left she . . . she said she loved him." "And what did Fox do?" "He said he loved her back!" Dana nearly yelled and stood up. "So?" Dana turned shocked. "So??" "So what's wrong with that?" "I'll tell you what's wrong with it. First of all, it's very unprofessional. And second, he shouldn't say what he doesn't mean. Molly is very impressionable and she'll be heartbroken when he leaves and she finds out it's not true. And he said she's not the only was he's begun to care for!" Dana stopped her ranting, breathing heavily. "Are you sure it's not true?" Dana froze. "What?" "Are you sure it's not true?" "You must be joking." "Dana, if there's one thing I've learned about Fox in all the years I've known him it's that he never says something like that when he doesn't mean it. He's been hurt too often to give it away freely." Dana turned away in disgust. "Dana, you may not believe this but . . . I've known Fox a long time and he has never told me how much he cares for me. I know he does by the way he treats me but he's never said the words. That's how much he values those words. When he says them it's because he has no doubt that they're true." Dana slowly sank down into her seat again. "It can't be," she whispered. Ruby gently rubbed her back. "Why?" "Because, it's too hard. The situation we met under, all that's happening now . . . it's just too hard." "But you feel it, too. Don't you." Ruby said, not asking. Dana turned and tears filled her eyes. "Oh, Ruby . . ." Ruby held her as she cried. ************************************* BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Mulder lowered his gun and slipped in a new clip. He only got a few shots off before he realized he wasn't alone anymore. He turned to see Adam standing about ten feet away watching him. Mulder sighed. He knew what was coming. If Ruby was the 'mother' of this place then Adam was the 'father'. He'd been here longer than anyone besides Ruby and was the oldest at 67. Now 'dad' had come to have a chat with one of the unruly 'sons'. "Nice shot," Adam said. BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! Mulder answered with his gun, nearly emptying the clip. "I remember when you had first learned to shoot. You couldn't hit the broadside of a barn." Adam eyed the target. "I guess not much has changed." Mulder didn't even turn. "You have some other reason for being out here or do you just like to tear down my self-esteem?" "Whatever works," Adam said calmly. Mulder sighed in disgust. "Look. She's a very nice woman I'm sure. But she's got this attitude that just doesn't work. I'm sorry I brought her here. I'm sorry I felt anything for her. And I'm most sorry Skinner ever assigned me to this 'case'." Adam waited in silence. "Are you done?" "Who does she think she is?" Mulder demanded. Adam rolled his eyes. "Apparently not." "I bust my butt trying to keep her and Molly safe," Mulder continued not listening. "From day one it's been nothing but problems with her. Everything I do is wrong and she just can't wait to pounce on it. I try to be nice and she bites my head off. The only good thing is that when this is over I can go back to my life and pretended this nightmare never happened!" Adam waited. "Now are you done?" Mulder shot him a death glare but said nothing more. "Good," Adam said. "Now I want you to shut up and listen to what I have to say. Then I want you to go jump in the lake to cool off and we'll leave it at that. Understood?" His answer was another glare. "Okay. Now I don't know what exactly happened but I do know that neither of you meant the things you said. I know it. You know it. Dana knows it. Even the stupid birds in this forest know it! I know for a fact that you were not raised to behave in such a way. And I know for a fact that you would gladly give your life for hers or Molly's. Tell me I'm wrong." Mulder said nothing but looked away. "I thought so. Now whatever petty argument_" "I told her Adam." He looked up, meeting the older man's eyes. "I told her what I never tell anyone and she threw it right back at me with a 'thanks, but no thanks'. How could she do this? I thought we'd changed. At least become nice to one another but . . . how could she be so cold when all I tried to do was be honest with her. "Believe me I know how wrong this is. Skinner would kill me if he knew I've fallen for my 'new assignment' but . . . I can't help it, Adam. I don't know how or why this happened but Dana Scully is unlike anyone I've ever met. And Molly . . . I've never seen a child the way I see her. I don't usually like children. But I love her. I really love her and to think that she and Dana will be gone when this is over . . . I can't describe how that hurts. And we've only known each other barely a month!" "Have you told her this? Not just the part about how you care about her but have you told her how she and Molly have changed you?" Again, Mulder didn't answer. "Mulder, if you can't tell her, then you can't expect her to understand. She's not one of your psychics. I get the feeling she doesn't even believe in that kind of stuff. But I do think she believes in you. No matter what you decide you need to work this out. You two aren't the only ones hurting by this. Molly cried for twenty minutes after you two stormed off." Mulder looked up with a pained expression. Adam watched him a moment longer before turning and walking away. Mulder stood a moment thinking over what they'd both said. Then he turned and headed for the lake at top speed. ************************************* The next three days were filled with tension. Everyone pretty much steered clear of the two bickering adults hoping they'd work it out but no end seemed to be in sight. They wanted to help but felt it best to let the storm blow over and let Mulder and Dana learn for themselves. ************************************* Dana came down the stairs and heard music coming from the den. She stepped over and peaked in the open door. Ruby sat in a rocking chair on one side of the fireplace where a low fire burned, slowly moving back and forth. Adam sat on the other side lightly strumming a guitar and humming. The rest of the guys were lounging about. Some reading, some carving wood, others just lost in thought. Molly lay in the middle of the floor coloring in the book Mulder had gotten her. "You just gonna hover at the door all night?" Adam asked, pausing in his playing. Dana jumped and saw Adam smiling at her. She smiled back and came in. Brad moved over on the couch to make room for her and Molly quickly moved to sit in her mother's lap. "I was just listening to you. You really have a beautiful voice, Adam," Dana said. He shrugged and began picking a tune again. "I just sing it the way I feel it. My mother always sang to me. Even up to the day she died about ten years ago." Everyone looked up when Mulder entered. "Hey, Ruby have you seen_" He stopped when he realized what was going on. He felt like he was interrupting a nice quiet moment. "Sorry." "Fox," Ruby said. "Come sit down. We're all just enjoying the evening." Mulder was about to refuse but the look Ruby gave him allowed no room for argument. He nodded and took a seat on the other side of the room. He and Dana studiously avoided each others eyes. "Adam, play that song I love so much," Ruby said. He smiled and began playing a new tune and humming along. Dana again realized how much power his voice held to move her. After awhile, Ruby joined in singing. /When the rain is blowin' in your face And the whole world is on your case I would offer you a warm embrace To make you feel my love When the evening shadows and the stars appear And there is no one to dry your tears I could hold you for a million years To make you feel my love/ Ruby and Adam's voices blended in perfect harmony. Dana let her gaze wonder over to Mulder as the song continued. /I know you haven't made your mind up yet But I would never do you wrong I've known it from the moment that we met There's no doubt in my mind where you belong/ Mulder slowly looked up at Dana, begging with his eyes for her understanding. /I'd go hungry I'd go black and blue I'd go crawling down the avenue There ain't nothing that I wouldn't do To make you feel my love/ Why did she fight it so hard? She knew how she felt. She knew what she wanted. She knew she shouldn't want it. But she also knew she couldn't help it. Nor did she think she could live without it. Mulder wanted only to make her realize what he knew so well. /Storms are raging on a rolling sea Down the highway of regret The winds of change are blowin' wild and free But you ain't seen nothin' like me yet There ain't nothing that I wouldn't do Go to the ends of the earth for you Make you happy, make your dreams come true To make you feel my . . . love/ Mulder and Dana both came to decisions as the song faded out. For a few minutes, no one moved. Everyone wanted to hold on to what they felt from that song. Ruby finally broke the silence with her soft voice. "It's getting late. I think Molly's almost gone." Dana looked down to see Molly on the verge of sleep. Dana stood, holding her. "Thank you, Adam. Ruby. That was beautiful." "Goodnight, Dana." "Goodnight." The others called their goodnights and Dana left the room. A few minutes later Brad said his goodnights then headed out the other door to his room. For a while no one said anything. Then Mulder looked up and realized everyone was staring at him. "What?" he asked. "Mulder, either you get your butt up those stairs and talk to that lovely woman or we'll throw you up there," Jake said. The others nodded their assent. Mulder knew these guys would never hurt him but he also knew they were very capable of following through on their threat. Slowly he stood and after a brief pause headed out and up the stairs. ************************************* Dana had just finished tucking Molly in when she heard the floor boards creak outside the bedroom door. She knew what was coming. She kissed Molly's forehead then turned out the bedside lamp and headed to the door. When she came out Mulder was leaning against the banister, arms folded across his chest. "Hey," he said quietly. "Hey." "I, uh . . . I need to talk to you." "Okay." He straightened and led her down the hall with his hand in the small of her back. He opened the door to the balcony and led her outside. He wasted little time. "Dr. Scully_" "Don't." "Huh?" "Don't call me Dr. Scully. It's too formal," she said not meeting his gaze. "Scully," he started again. "I'm sorry. For everything. For making you uncomfortable. For putting you down and hurting you. I never wanted that." "I'm sorry, too. No matter what I felt . . . I shouldn't have gotten upset over it. It's just . . . I can't let Molly be hurt, Mulder. I can't do that to her. And if you were to just be gone one day . . . I can't." "What about you?" "What?" "You say you can't let that happen to her but . . . what would it do to you?" "I don't . . ." she turned away and braced herself against the railing. He came up and placed his hands on her shoulders. "Scully. I meant what I said. I care . . . I love both you and Molly," he said slowly, cautiously, honestly. "I didn't plan it. I didn't want it. And I certainly didn't ever expect it. But now . . . I can't imagine being, feeling, doing, or wanting anything else. And I need to know if you feel the same." She was silent and that made him worry. Finally, "Is it true . . . you've never told Ruby how much you care for her?" Mulder stepped back surprised and Dana turned to face him. "Yes," he said. "Why?" "I guess . . . I was always afraid she didn't really care about me. I've never been able to tell someone how I feel about them unless I really meant it. Meant it so much that even if they rejected me, at least I'd know I was honest with them and they were honest with me." Dana was quiet as she let this sink in. "Mulder . . . you know I'm careful. You know why_" "Yes. But I can promise you aren't risking yourself with me. I'm not going to let you down." She turned away unsure. "Scully, please. Let me love you. Let yourself love me." She turned again to face him. And after taking a moment to find the truth in his eyes she moved into his embrace and held him tightly. Then he pulled back and cupped her face. He started to lean in to kiss her but she stopped him. "One question." "Yeah?" "Why do you keep calling me 'Scully'?" He stopped. "I . . . I didn't realize . . ." She raised her eyebrows waiting. "I guess that's how I see you." "What?" He struggled to explain. "I don't like calling you Dr. Scully either. Like you said it's too formal. And everyone else calls you Dana_" She smiled slightly. "It's my name." "I know. I know that but . . . you're so much more than that. I want to call you something that no one else does. And in my mind it covers all of who you are. Besides, I guess I've just gotten used to seeing you as 'Scully' in my dreams." "Oh." "Would you prefer I didn't?" She paused only a moment. "Actually, I kind of like it. Mulder," she finished with a smile. He smiled right back. "Scully . . ." She gave a slight nod and then he kissed her. A real kiss that expressed all that he felt for her. ************************************* Ruby opened the front door a crack the next morning, curious, to see a man with sandy blond hair. They didn't often get visitors all the way up here, especially unexpected ones. "Yes?" "Good morning. My name is Scott Paulson. I'm a friend of Dana's." After all Ruby had heard about Dana's situation she was very cautious. "May I see some ID" "Certainly." Scott pulled out his badge. Ruby scrutinized it a moment. "How do you know she's here?" "Assistant Director Walter Skinner of the FBI told me. I was on the case before the FBI got involved." "Please come in," she said still cautious. "Thank you." Scott entered and looked around. "This is quite a place you've got here." "Thank you. If you'll wait just a moment." Ruby started up the stairs. She stopped at Scully's door and knocked lightly. "Dana?" She opened the door a crack. "Dana? Oh my!" She quickly closed the door again. She thought a moment before coming back downstairs. "It could be a moment. Dana's not up yet." "Is something wrong? You sounded surprised by something_" "Oh. No, nothing at all. I just . . . if you'll follow me you can wait_" Scott looked at her suspiciously. "I think I'll just get Dana myself." He started for the stairs but Ruby stopped him. "Please, if you'll just wait_" "Morning, Ruby," Brad said entering the front hall. "Is Dana up yet?" "And you are?" Scott asked, with a narrowed gaze. "Brad. Who are you?" "Scott. Dana's boyfriend." "What??" Ruby and Brad exclaimed. "Oh this is not good," Ruby said. "Dana doesn't have a boyfriend," Brad said looking this guy up and down. He could take him, easy. "How do you know?" Scott asked, placing his hands on his hips defiantly. "She told me," Brad shot back. "She did not!" "Wanna bet?" Both men watched each other closely. Then they turned to Ruby who was trying to think how to explain what she saw upstairs. As one both men decided to see for themselves and hurried up the stairs. "Hey!" Ruby said. "You can't_ Adam, Caleb, Jake, everybody! You guys get in here!" Brad and Scott reached to open the door when it was suddenly opened from the other side. Mulder and Scully stood there both looking rumpled from sleep . . . in her room . . . together. "Scott!" Scully said, surprised. "Dana!" Brad and Scott yelled in shock. "Oh boy," Mulder said. "Mulder!" Scott hissed through clenched teeth. "Mulder!" Brad protested. "Scott . . ." Scully started. "Mommy?" Molly called concerned. Suddenly both Brad and Scott launched themselves at Mulder. The next minute was pure chaos as Brad and Scott attacked Mulder and the rest of the guys thundered upstairs to break it up. Finally everyone stood on the upstairs landing. Brad and Scott held back by the other guys. Ruby stood on the stairs. Opposite the guys, Scully stood holding Molly, Mulder stood beside her. There was a tense silence before everyone started talking at once. "Dana what's going on?" Scott demanded. "Mulder how could you?" Brad said. "Scott what are you doing here?" Scully asked. "I'm hungry," Molly said. "All right, Mulder!" Caleb, Jake, Mike, Randy and Frank said. "Everyone calm down," Adam said. Mulder just stood there silently. Finally, Ruby had had enough. She whistled as loud as she could sending everyone into silence. "All right. Last I checked this was still my house so I make the rules. Mr. Paulson you can wait in the den with Adam. The rest of you boys go out and start on your chores. I'll get you if I need you. Dana. Fox. You two get presentable then meet downstairs. Go on now." No one moved. "I said now!" Her tone sent everyone into motion. Ten minutes later Mulder came down the stairs. He didn't know what hit him. Brad tackled him from behind and took him down. "Mulder, how could you do this to me? I thought we were friends!" "Brad, stop!" Scully yelled. The other guys came and pulled him off Mulder. Mulder sat up and touched his bleeding lip. Scully knelt next to him, inspecting it. "Are you okay?" "Yeah. I think so." She helped him stand up then turned to Brad. "I'm sorry, Brad. I never meant to hurt you. I think you're a very nice man but I just don't see . . ." Brad sighed in defeat. "Yeah. I know. I guess I always did." "I really am sorry. Will you still be my friend?" "Yeah. Sure." He sent her a weak smile. "You be careful around this guy. Mulder's a tough one to please." Scully smiled. "I'll remember that." Brad turned to Mulder. "Sorry, man." "I'll live." With a last glance Brad left with the guys following close behind. "I told you about that crush, didn't I?" He smiled and winced at the cut in his lip. "Come on. Let's get you cleaned up. Then I need to talk with Scott." She led him back upstairs to fix his lip. ************************************* Mulder sat on the toilet seat in the bathroom as Scully got what she needed to patch him up. "Okay, now hold still," she said turning to him with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. She gently tilted his chin up and applied the disinfectant. Mulder hissed and winced. "Sorry," she said. "Not your fault." She smiled and gently blew on the cut to ease the burning. Mulder closed his eyes and smiled. "Careful, Doc. You're treading dangerous waters with actions like that." "I'll take my chances." He opened his eyes, smiling. "Oh yeah?" In a second she was in his lap, his arms holding her firmly in place. "Come on, Mulder. I've got to finish you up." "I think if you kiss it better I'll be good as new." She smiled. "That'll hurt you more than help." "I'll take my chances," he countered. "Mulder, please don't tempt me like that. I've got a dirty job to be done waiting downstairs." His smile faded. "I know. I'm sorry. This'll be hard on you." "I'll survive. It's what I do." "Yeah, well, when this is all over, you'll do more than just survive. You'll live." She smiled. "You always this mushy?" "Never had a reason until I met you." "Well after something like that you deserve a kiss." He smiled as she slowly kissed him. A few minutes later she reluctantly pulled away. "I really have to go." "You sure you want to do this alone?" She nodded. "I need to." With a last kiss she headed off before she lost her nerve for facing Scott and gave into Mulder's TLC. ************************************* Scott was sitting rigidly in the arm chair by the fire place when Scully entered. She nodded at Adam who'd been waiting with him. Adam stood and left them alone, closing the door behind him. Scully took a seat across from Scott and waited, unsure how to begin. "How are you doing?" he asked through clenched teeth. "Fine. You?" "Not as well, I imagine." Scully let it slide. She had a lot to tell him. Some of it her own fault. "What are you doing here?" "I came to tell you that we caught Luccinni." "You did?" "Yes. Last night. Turns out Agent Ashman was a friend of his. He's the one who told them where you'd be and that's how they knew what house to burn down." "Oh. Well, that's good news." "Isn't it?" Scully sighed. It was time. "Scott, there's some things I have to tell you." He stood suddenly. "Don't bother. I saw plenty just a little while ago." "Scott, please. It's not what you think. This isn't easy for me_" "You want me to make it easy for you? After all I've done and this is how you repay me?" "Scott, I'm sorry. I never wanted to hurt you. But I didn't know how to tell you I didn't feel the same way you did." "You could've just said it." "Could I? Would you really have believed me and let it go?" she countered. "So you led me on. For three years you let me make a fool of myself when you never had any intention of returning the sentiment." "Scott, it's not that I didn't want to. Believe me, I tried. I just . . . couldn't." "Well, that's convenient. Is that why you never tried to get Molly to like me? If she didn't then you had an excuse to refuse me_" "Scott, that's not fair. Molly is her own person and can decide some things for herself." "That's nice, Dana. That's just great!" He picked up a pillow and threw it against the far wall almost breaking a vase there. "Scott, calm down right now. We can deal with this as adults." "Calm down? Calm down? I gave three years of my life to you Dana and what did it get me? Nothing! This guy Mulder baby-sits you for a few weeks_" "This has nothing to do with Mulder_" "This has everything to do with Mulder," he spat, his face right in hers. "I give you three years for nothing. He gives you three weeks and suddenly you let him into your bed_" Something inside her snapped and he was cut off as she slapped him. An instant later the doors to the room flew open and her 'protectors' entered ready for battle. She stopped them with a raised hand. Scott rubbed his face where she'd hit him. "Gee, Dana. You've got whole army here. Nothing happen with them either?" "You_" Mulder started forward but a look from Dana, and Adam and Jake held him back. "Get out, Scott," she said in a dangerously low voice. "Nothing happened last night between me and Mulder. We came to some realizations and an agreement. We kissed then I asked him to stay with me. But nothing happened. All we did was sleep. Scott, I never wanted to hurt you. But you've gone too far. If this is what you're really like then just leave. And I'm sorry we both wasted three years on each other. No matter how big a jerk you are being I am thankful for the help you gave me. But I don't need that help anymore." Scott seethed a moment more before stalking to the door. He considered belting Mulder a good one on his way out if he thought he could get away with it. But there was no way he'd make it out alive against those giants that were hanging around. With a last glare he stormed out of the house. Mulder quickly came over to Scully and took her by the shoulders. "Are you okay?" She seemed a little weak in the knees now that it was over. "Well, that went as bad as could be expected." She gratefully sat in the chair Mulder helped her to. "Scully, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for any of this to happen_" "Don't. I made this mess myself. I've got no one to blame but me. Whether or not I met you I would've had to do this sooner or later. I just . . . wish I hadn't hurt him so." "He hurt you, too. What he said_" She looked up, accusingly. "How did you know what he said?" She could understand anyone hearing her slapping him but you'd have to be right outside the door to hear everything that went on. Realization dawned on her. Mulder and the guys looked away ashamed. "You were eavesdropping?" "Hey," Adam said defensively. "That guy was really unhinged. There was no way any of us were leaving you alone with him." Scully was about to protest when she knew it was useless. She sighed. "Well, thank you. But I'm not a child." "We know that," Jake said. "Truth is we've grown rather protective. You should've seen Mulder, though. He nearly broke through the wall when he thought Scott had hit you." "Scott's not like that. He's got a nasty temper but . . . no, he'd never do that. He knows I wouldn't stand for that again." Only Mulder knew what she meant by that. "Well," she said. "Now that that's done. I've got news." "What?" "They got him. As of last night, Antonio Luccinni is in custody." "That's perfect. I'm ready to head back." "You got a problem with us?" Adam joked. Mulder smiled. "None whatsoever. But also as of last night I have a life." He turned to Scully and smiled. "And I'm anxious to get started on it." Scully smiled back and hugged him. ************************************* Next Day 9:34 AM Mulder set down the last of the bags by the door. "Molly," Scully called up the stairs. "It's time to go." Suddenly Brad appeared at the top carrying a bawling Molly. "Momma," she said through her tears, "I don't wanna go!" Brad reached the bottom with a pleading look of his own. "Do you have to go?" Scully smiled. "Yes. We do. Molly, don't you want to go home? See all your friends again?" "No?" she said softly, uncertain. Scully smiled, tenderly. "It's time, honey." Molly's chin began to quiver again. "Hey," Adam said to her. "How about if we all ride to the airport and say our good-byes there?" Molly looked to her mother, pleading. Scully smiled and sighed. "I suppose if there's no objections . . ." Ruby smiled and nodded her assent, then turned to her charges. "Okay, everyone in the truck. Adam, you drive." Everyone hurried off to get their coats leaving Mulder and Scully alone in the front hall. "You know," Mulder said with a smile as he pulled her into his arms. "We could stay. I could quit my job. We could build our own cabin and tame this wilderness. You and me." Scully smiled up at him. "First of all, what wilderness? There's a highway to a city about twenty-five miles away. And second, you and I both know you'd go into catatonic shock without real civilization on almost a daily basis. I've seen how antsy you've gotten. And frankly," she finished with a mischievous smile as she ran her hands up his chest, "you wouldn't be much fun in a coma." "Dr. Scully, you surprise me," he said, leering back. "I try . . ." Their lips met for only a moment before they were interrupted by whistles and cat calls. They turned to see everyone had returned and was watching them. They smiled and pulled apart. "Dana, Molly said she'd like to ride with us, if that's okay," Jake said. "Sure." Everyone headed out, a few of they guys grabbing the bags by the door as they went. Scully turned to Mulder with a smile before they too finally headed out. "Well, Agent Mulder, you and me in a car all alone and an hour drive to the airport ahead of us . . ." "You'll be pleased to know I do very well at multi-tasking," he replied with a smile and wrapped his arm around her leading her out. "Oh yeah?" He closed the door behind them. ************************************* "Attention. Delta flight 1735 to Virginia will begin boarding in fifteen minutes." "Okay, Molly. Time to say good-bye," Scully said. Molly sighed then gave Brad a huge hug. Then he set her down and she hugged the rest of the guys who were each waiting their turn. Each made a promise of what they'd do when she came back to visit while she promised to write them and let them know she was okay. "Oh, Dana," Ruby said, pulling he into a hug. "I'm gonna miss you. And just when you and Fox got interesting." Scully laughed. "I promise we'll be back, Ruby." Ruby pulled back smiling. "You'd better. I need someone responsible to drag Fox along with them." Then she turned to Mulder and hugged him. "Good-bye, Fox." "Bye, Ruby." He started to pull away but she stopped him and whispered in his ear, "You hold onto her, Fox. You'll never find one like her again." He smiled. "I know, Ruby. Believe me, I know." He turned away then back. "Hey, Ruby?" "Yes?" "I love you." The older woman smiled as sudden tears filled he eyes. "I love you, too, Fox." By now Scully had finished her good-byes to the guys and was holding Molly and waiting. Mulder turned and shook hands with the men he considered family. Finally, he reached Adam. Adam smiled warmly. "Don't screw it up, Mulder." He glanced at Scully and Molly. "They need you as much as you need them." Mulder nodded then hugged the older man. "Thanks, Adam." He pulled back grasping the older man's shoulders. "You're the father I wish I'd had." Adam nodded thankfully. "Well," said Ruby. "We've still got chores to do so we'd best head out. You call us when you get in," she commanded Mulder. He nodded then watched along with Scully and Molly as eight large men and one tiny woman headed down the hall. Then he turned back to the two women he cared most about. "Thanks for taking us there, Mulder," Molly said. "I'm glad I got to know all of them." "And they're glad they got to know you, Molly. Almost as much as I am." Molly smiled. "Delta flight 1735 is now boarding at Gate D1." "You ready?" Mulder asked Scully. "Back to DC?" She nodded and smiled. "Back to a new life." He smiled and leaned down to kiss her. Molly giggled, covering her eyes and grinning. They started for the plane when Mulder stopped suddenly and patted his pockets. "My cell phone. Skinner was going to call . . . I must have left it at the house." "Is it a big problem?" Scully asked. "No. Let's go. I'll have Ruby mail it to me." Then they got on the plane. ************************************* From the other side of the hall a man in a dark coat watched as the tall dark haired man boarded the plane with the redhead and her daughter. Then he pulled out his cell phone and dialed. "It's me. I just saw them get on. No, I don't think they know. You got it." Then he hung up and made his way over to board the plane as well. ************************************* "No, we haven't been able to locate Agent Mulder," Skinner said into the phone trying to hear over the voices of the dozen or more agents in his office doing the same thing he was. "No, I_" He saw his assistant come in and head over to him through the crowded office of agents. "Hold on." He covered the mouth piece as he spoke to her. "What have you got?" "I finally got through but Agent Mulder isn't with his cell phone. A woman named Ruby Hartford answered it." "Is she still on the line?" "Yes, sir." Skinner got back on the line. "I'm going to have to call you back. I might have something." He hung up then switched lines. "Ms. Hartford?" "Yes?" "My name is Walter Skinner. I'm an assistant director with the FBI." "Oh, yes, Mr. Skinner. Fox mentioned you." "Yes. Do you know where he is right now?" "On his way home. We saw him and Dana and Molly off on the plane this morning. He must have forgotten his phone here. Is something wrong?" "Yes, actually." The was silence on the other end. Then, "He's out isn't he?" "Excuse me?" "The man who was after Dana. He's gone." "How'd_" "Forgive me, Mr. Skinner but I think you have more important calls to make than to me. Delta flight 1735." "Yes. Of course. Thank you." He hung up and turned to his assistant. "I need to get a hold of the airline and that plane. Now." ************************************* "Ruby? What's wrong?" asked Brad. Ruby turned to see her 'boys' sitting at the table all watching her. "They're in trouble." ************************************* Scully looked over at Molly sleeping soundly in her window seat. She'd begged to have that seat so she could look outside but she'd fallen asleep twenty minutes later and had been ever since. Scully looked up as Mulder returned to his seat on the aisle. The look on his face concerned her. "Everything okay?" He seemed to pull himself out of his thoughts. "Fine. Why?" "You looked troubled." He smiled. "It's nothing. I just found out they don't serve iced tea on this flight." Then he turned and pulled out a book. She watched him a moment, suspiciously. Then, "You'd tell me if something was wrong, right?" "Of course. Don't worry. We'll be in DC soon. Everything's fine." He lifted his arm and pulled her closer against his shoulder. "Why don't you get some sleep, okay?" She nodded and closed her eyes as she snuggled up to him. When he heard her breathing slow he turned his head and glanced behind them. Three rows back and to the left sat a man in a dark coat. The man glanced at Mulder, bored, then faced forward again. Mulder got a bad feeling in his stomach. ************************************* "Hey, Jackson. Look at this." Captain Richard Jackson looked over at his first officer, Mark Stevens, then down at what Stevens was pointing to. He cursed at the little red flashing light that was soon followed by the voice of Annoying Annie. "Landing gear, malfunctioning. Landing gear, malfunctioning . . ." Jackson cursed again. "Just had to happen today, didn't it? Had to happen on my anniversary. Suzy's gonna kill me." "Hey, you can't predict these things." Jackson sighed, tiredly. "Where are we now?" "Um, just about to Louisville." Jackson picked up the radio. "Louisville Center this is Delta flight 1735, do you copy? Over." "1735 this is Louisville, go ahead. Over." "Yeah, we've got a landing gear malfunctioning. Request permission for emergency landing. ETA thirty minutes." "Copy that, 1735. Hold for instructions." Jackson turned to Stevens. "Tell Ron to get on the horn and prepare the passengers." He turned back to face forward. "They're in for a bumpy ride." ************************************* "Sir!" Skinner looked up from his phone conversation as Agent Coombs hurried over. "What is it, Coombs?" "There's a problem with the plane." The room suddenly quieted. "What?" "There landing gear is malfunctioning. They're making an emergency landing in Louisville, Kentucky." Skinner called to his assistant. "Get me on a flight to Louisville immediately." ************************************* Mulder looked down as Scully stirred. She looked up and smiled when she locked eyes with him. "Hey," he said. She stretched under his arm. "You make a good pillow." He smiled. "Do I?" "Yeah. Soft and warm and . . ." she trailed off with a twinkle in her eye. He smiled wider. "I repeat: Dr. Scully, you surprise me." "You have no idea how surprising I can be," she said and kissed him. He was about to comment when a voice came over the speakers. "Ladies and Gentlemen may I have your attention please. I've just been informed there is a slight problem in the cockpit." There were cries of surprise and worry. "Please do not panic and remain calm. Our front landing gear is malfunctioning and we are being forced to land early. We will land in Louisville, Kentucky in about thirty minutes. Before then I and the rest of the crew will review the crash position with you. At this time we ask that you return to your seats and fasten your safety belts. We apologize for this inconvenience. Thank you." Scully turned to Mulder, fully awake. "Nothing's wrong, huh?" "Hey, I had no idea about this. None." She nodded, believing him. But that didn't make her worry any less. ************************************* Skinner walked quickly down the hall to the elevator, slipping on his overcoat as he gave instructions to Coombs. "Get on the phone to the Louisville field office. Tell them of the situation. See if they can get a hold of Agent Mulder. If they do, have them escort Dr. Scully and her daughter to their offices and keep them under heavy guard. I'll meet them there." "Yes, sir." Skinner got on the elevator and waited for the doors to close. He only hoped they wouldn't be too late. ************************************* Louisville, Kentucky 6:45 PM "Remind me never to fly again," Scully said, as they entered the airport with the other passengers. She could've done just fine without the scare they'd had in landing and exiting the plane by the air filled slide they have for emergencies. Mulder smiled and rubbed her back soothingly. "It's all over now." Then, "I need to try and call, Skinner. Tell him we'll be delayed." Just then over the PA system. "Fox Mulder, please pick up a white courtesy phone. Fox Mulder, pick up a white courtesy phone." "Mommy, I have to use the bathroom." "Okay, Molly." Scully started for the bathrooms but Mulder stopped her. "What?" "I just . . . don't think you should be out of my sight." Scully laughed. "Well, you can't join us in there. Besides, nothing's wrong. Right?" she asked pointedly. "Right. Of course." "Okay. So we'll go to the restroom. Look there's a courtesy phone right across the hall." "Okay. Hurry." Scully nodded and the two of them headed off. He watched her enter the ladies room then headed over to the phone and picked it up. "This is Fox Mulder." "Please wait to be transferred." As Mulder was waiting an older woman bumped into him and dropped her bag, spilling it's contents. "Oh my goodness," she said, a little fretfully. "I'm so sorry." As she continued to apologize Mulder helped her pick up the discarded items. ************************************* "All better?" Scully asked as she and Molly exited the bathroom. "Much." "Okay, let's find Mulder." Scully scanned the suddenly crowded hall but didn't see him at the phone. "Hm. That's strange. I wonder where he went." "Maybe he had to use the little boys room," Molly suggested. Scully smiled at her. "Maybe." Then a man approached her. "Dana Scully?" "Who's asking?" she asked suddenly suspicious. The man flashed a badge. "Special Agent Russo. I'm with the Louisville field office." "Oh. Of course. Sorry," she said calming down. "I've come to take you to our offices until your flight can be rescheduled." "Where's Agent Mulder?" "He's already waiting for us. He sent me to get you." "Oh. Okay. Let's go." As they headed off Scully got a funny feeling in her stomach but pushed it aside. This was ridiculous. Tony was in jail. Mulder was waiting for her. She was being escorted by an FBI agent. She was fine. But she wouldn't feel fine until she saw Mulder again. ************************************* The woman thanked Mulder profusely then headed off. He checked the bathroom doorway to see if Scully had come out. She hadn't. He waited wondering what was taking so long for the call to connect. Finally, there was a click then silence. "Hello?" Nothing. "Hello." He hung up confused just as a Delta employee approached him. "Are you Fox Mulder?" "Yes?" "We have an urgent message from the FBI." Mulder felt his blood run cold. "What is it?" "They said for you to take a Dana Scully and her daughter to the field office immediately_" Mulder cursed and ran to the ladies restroom. Not caring about laws and decency he barged in. "Scully? Molly?" He began searching the room, checking every stall as the women in there looked on in shock. Nothing. 'No. This is not happening. No!' He ran back out and started through the crowd looking for them ignoring the annoyed looks from weary travelers. "Molly? Scully!" Mulder stopped in the middle of the crowd and looked around helplessly. They were gone. ************************************* 7:50 PM "Mr. Skinner!" someone called as he stepped into the gate. He looked up to see an agent he recognized coming towards him. "Is Mulder here yet?" "Yes, but sir, we have a problem." 'Of course we do,' he thought tiredly. 'And why shouldn't we?' Then said aloud, "Take me to him." ************************************* "Listen to me! We have to close off this airport!" Mulder yelled. The security guard ignored the man sitting at the table in handcuffs. They unofficially arrested him when he'd gone off yelling and running through the airport. He claimed he was an FBI agent but when asked for ID he couldn't provide it. "They can't be allowed to leave!" Mulder nearly screamed in frustration. Just then the door to the office burst open and Skinner entered. He flashed his badge at the guard. "Uncuff him. Now." The guard did so quickly then left at Skinner's nod. Mulder hurried to the door but Skinner stopped him. "I have to find them. We have to block off this airport_" "It's already been done but it could be hours before we find anything. Why didn't you have your badge?" Skinner noted the deep worry in Mulder's face as he paced. "Molly had it. She wanted to see it . . ." He tried not to panic. 'I lost them. I lost them!' "Luccinni's gone," Skinner said. Mulder sat heavily at the table and buried his face in his hands. "I know." "What happened?" "We don't have time for this!" "Mulder_" "Sir, sitting here talking isn't going to cut it!" "Mulder, we've got the place sealed off. All we can do is wait. Now let's head to the field office. You can tell me on the way." "No. I have to be here_" "That's an order, agent. Follow it or I pull you from this case right now and have you cuffed again." They stared off tensely. Finally, Mulder headed out the door. Skinner followed. ************************************* Five Hours Later (1 AM) Skinner sat at the desk in the office he'd been given at the field office talking of the phone. As he talked he watched Mulder in a chair across the room. "Uh-huh. Yes. I understand. Okay. Okay. Thank you." He hung up and Mulder looked up expectantly. Skinner hesitated. "An airport employee reported seeing a woman matching Dr. Scully's description get on a private plane with a little girl and a man in a dark coat matching the description you gave." Mulder was on the edge of his seat. "Headed where?" Skinner hesitated again before answering. "D.C." Mulder was up and out of the room before Skinner could stop him. ************************************* Washington DC 12 hours later Mulder sat on the couch in Skinner's office mentally kicking himself as other agents buzzed about checking leads and going over files on Dana, Luccinni and anyone associated with them. He looked up as someone sat down next to him. It was Skinner. "Well?" Skinner looked away. "You were right. The malfunction on the plane was no accident. After a close inspection they found what was left of a small explosive device on the landing gear." "It was all a set up. So perfect . . ." Mulder leaned back on the couch rubbing his face tiredly. "Mulder, go home. Get some rest." "I can't," came the muffled response. "You've been up for over 24 hours_" "And Scully is missing along with Molly. I can't afford to sleep until they're safe." Skinner was about to question Mulder's intensity when someone called to them. "AD Skinner. Agent Mulder." Both looked up to see Coombs with a woman about 24 dressed as a 'working girl'. "This woman says she has information," Coombs said. Mulder was across the room in an instant. ************************************* Mulder paced the back of the room watching the girl. Skinner allowed him to stay when everyone else left on the condition he behaved himself. "See, I do a little work for Mr. Luccinni. Entertain friends. Deliver packages, that sort of thing." "What do you know about a Dr. Dana Scully?" Skinner asked. "I knew the Doc before, when she and the boss were hooked up, you know? Nice lady. Only one who ever treated me like I was a real person. That's why I'm here." "Where is she? Is she okay? Is Molly_" Mulder asked quickly before Skinner cut him off. "Yeah. They're fine. But Boss ain't happy. He's been real upset with her ever since she left five years ago." "Where?" Skinner asked. "You promise you'll protect me, right?" Skinner nodded. "Where?" "I heard Rico say something about one of their fishing warehouses. I don't know which one but they only got about five. You'll find the Doc and her kid in one a them." Without a word Mulder headed straight for the door and out of the office. Skinner hurried after him. "Mulder_" "Five warehouses. We know of at least three. If we start now_" "Mulder_" Skinner said again, dodging agents to catch up with him. "I figure Luccinni's going to want to talk to her before anything else. He'll want answers. That gives us time_" "Mulder!" Skinner caught up with him and grabbed his shoulder but Mulder shoved him off hard surprising everyone. "I have to find them!" Mulder yelled. He stared at Skinner tensely. Skinner glanced at the other agents watching and tried to speak calmly. "Mulder, I know you're upset about losing them_" Mulder laughed humorlessly. "You don't know. You have no idea!" "Every agent hates to fail an assignment_" "This isn't just some assignment!" he yelled. "I lost Sam! I won't lose them, too!" Suddenly, Skinner was beginning to catch on. "Mulder . . . you didn't." Mulder merely turned and started away but Skinner stopped him again. "Mulder_" "I love her! There, you happy?" Skinner tried very hard to calm down. This was not what they needed right now. "Agent Mulder, I don't think I have to tell you how unprofessional it is for an agent to get involved with his charge. Bureau protocol_" "Screw your precious protocol and rules! You can have my badge, my job, the X-Files, I don't care! I lost them. I have to get them back. I have to," he finished quietly. Skinner sighed tiredly. He should've known this would happen. That first day . . . he should've known. "All right," he said finally. "But we do this my way or I'll pull you so fast your head will spin. Got it?" Mulder nodded. Skinner turned to Coombs. "Make Miss Pascal comfortable and start the paperwork on her protection. James!" he turned shouting. "Sir?" "Get me those addresses for Luccinni's fishing warehouses." "Yes, sir." He took off. "Marks, Angelino, O'Connell, get a swat team together and brief them on the situation." Agents began moving to follow order and the place was once again buzzing with activity. Skinner turned to Mulder. "Agent Mulder, let's find Dr. Scully and her little girl." ************************************* Scully pulled Molly closer and looked up at the sound of voices approaching outside the office. She jumped slightly when the door flew open with a bang. And there he stood with three of his goons. He smiled coldly and slowly entered. "Well, well, well. Dana Scully." She nodded trying very hard to stay calm and alert. She tightened her hold on Molly. "Tony. It's been awhile." "Five years." Scully just watched him and tensed as he moved. He pulled out a chair and sat across from her. "You never even said goodbye. I thought after all we'd been to each other I deserved_" "You deserve?" she asked with quiet incredulousness. "What exactly do you deserve from me? A thank you? For what? All the times you lied to me? For all the times you put me down?" Her voice slowly rose. "You want a thank you for every time you hit me?" She flinched as Luccinni stood suddenly and threw his chair across the room. Then he was in her face pointing a finger at her in warning. "You show some respect, Dana," he said with quiet fury. "I made you who you are. Without me and my money you'd be some dame workin' the street. Don't you ever forget that." Slowly he stepped back. "Why'd you leave me, Dana? I coulda given you everything." "I didn't want anything you had," she said in a low voice. He nodded. "Well, that's too bad. 'Cuz now there ain't nothin' that can save you." He turned away then back as he spoke. "I hear you got involved with that cop, what's his name, Paulson?" He shook his head, chuckling. "There's nothing between us. There never was." "Yeah. So I hear. Now there's another one. FBI guy named Mulder. My, my, Dana. You sure do get around." Scully's eyes widened. Was there nothing this man didn't know? "Don't be so surprised, sweetheart. I've made it my business to keep up with you as much as I could. The only thing I can't figure is this little lady here," he said leaning in close to Molly. The little girl moved closer to her mother and Scully wrapped her arms more tightly around her. Luccinni watched them both a moment then began casually pacing again. "Rico tells me you're the genius who came up with the drug that killed Joey." "Tony, I had nothing to do with that_" "Really? That ain't what I hear." "Tony, Joey never should have been given that drug. It was still experimental. Harry should've waited for the final results then this wouldn't have happened." "But see, Dana, it did happen. Now someone's gotta pay for it. You gotta lot to pay for." He stepped back in mock sorrow. "I'm sorry it's come to this, Dana. I truly am. We coulda had a great life together." He turned to leave. "Take care'a them, boys. Mulder, too. Make sure there's nothing left behind." "Tony, don't do this," she called after him. "Please, Tony!" He kept walking. Scully stood suddenly. "You'd kill your own daughter!" she cried out desperately. Luccini stopped and turned. "What?" The minute the words had left her mouth Scully regretted it. "My daughter?" Luccini said. He moved over to Molly who backed into her mothers legs. "I have a daughter?" He smiled. Then it faded when he looked up at Scully. "You weren't going to tell me were you?" He stood and stepped closer backing Scully up to the wall. "You were never going to tell me I had a daughter!" Scully held Molly tight and closed her eyes awaiting Luccinni's blow. But it never came and she felt him back up. "Leo!" "Yeah, boss?" "Take my daughter to the pool room. Get her some food. Her mother and I have some more things to discuss." "Tony, please," Scully begged. "Please don't hurt her_" He turned to look at her. "Hurt her? Are you suggesting I'd hurt my daughter? I just found out about her. I'm not going to do anything to lose her. You on the other hand, you have not been honest with me. And I don't like when the mother of my child ain't honest with me." 'Oh, Mulder,' she thought. 'Where are you?' ************************************* Mulder and Skinner looked up from the map of the city they were looking over as a commotion came from outside. They shared a look then hurried out. "Now listen here, young man. We don't want to cause trouble but Fox is a friend of ours and we want to see him." Mulder came out of the office and stopped in shock. "Ruby?" Ruby turned and started towards him with the guys following close behind. "Fox, we came as fast as we could." "What are you doing here?" "Mr. Skinner called looking for you. When I heard Dana was in trouble . . . well we weren't just going to sit around and do nothing, that's for sure." Before Mulder could reply, Coombs spoke from the office doorway. "Sir! I think we've got something." ************************************* "What is it?" Mulder asked. Coombs was cut off from answering when the door opened. Mulder and Paulson locked eyes. Paulson walked over. "So? What have you got?" Coombs pointed to the map on the large conference table. "As you know the first three warehouses were dead ends. Looks like Luccinni closed them with in the past week. Found nothing. Same with the fourth as soon as we found it. But the fifth . . . Banks just called. He thinks they found them in a warehouse on the docks. Pier fourteen." "Have they gone in?" Skinner asked. "They're waiting for your orders." "We can't just storm the place," Mulder said. "Luccinni would take them out before we got past the gates." "Miss Pascal said something about a delivery," Coombs said. "If we can take the delivery's place," said Mulder, "we can ambush them." "Like a Trojan horse," said Ruby. "Exactly." Skinner turned to Coombs. "Tell Banks and his men to sit tight. Check the delivery schedules we've gathered. See if they've got a pattern we can use." "Yes, sir." Coombs left. "Now what?" asked Brad. Mulder sighed and looked at Paulson, hating the answer he knew. "Now we wait for opportunity to knock." ************************************* Opportunity knocked just two hours later and it couldn't have been better. The shipment that was to happen was one that just happened to have FBI already on the inside. Agent Borrelli had been planted several months before in an attempt to get inside information that could help with the prosecution. What with Scully agreeing to testify, the agent's assignment was due to end in two weeks. Mulder was forever thankful they still had him inside. It would make their pulling off the ambush that much easier. As soon as the connection had been made a plan was formed. Within an hour they were ready to roll. ************************************* Mulder sat in his place in the back of the truck. He always hated the raid part because the uniform was so uncomfortable. But this time he hardly noticed as his thoughts were consumed with something else. "Hey, Mulder. You okay?" Mulder turned surprised by Paulson's voice. His surprise showed clearly on his face and Paulson smiled humorlessly. "Don't get me wrong. I'm not starting to worry about your feelings or anything_" "Paulson_" Paulson held up a hand, cutting him off. "Save it. We've got more important things to worry about that who won the girl." "We never intended_" "Yeah. I know. I remember that first day, remember? Dana couldn't have you far enough away and you looked ready to dump the assignment right off. But Dana's got this thing about her . . ." "Believe me, I know." "Yeah." Paulson shifted in his seat adjusting his helmet. "Well, that's that. Let's make sure there's a girl to be won." Mulder nodded and they prepared themselves as the truck began to slow. ************************************* The back of the truck doors burst open and the agents filed out guns drawn. "DOWN ON THE GROUND! MOVE!" "GET YOUR HAND'S UP! STEP AWAY!" Orders were shouted to Luccini's men who were working the warehouse. While the rest of the agents were securing that room, Mulder, Paulson and three other agents headed off in search of Molly and Scully. They came to a door. Mulder stood to one side as Paulson took the other. Paulson counted to three on his hand and Mulder nodded. On three Paulson kicked the door open. "ON THE GROUND NOW!" A shot rang out and Paulson fell. Mulder fired off his own shots and took out the two men in there. The other two agents saw to Paulson as Mulder heard a small cry coming from somewhere in the room. He's recognize that whimper anywhere. "Molly?" he called out softly. He turned as a tiny head poked out from under a table. "Molly!" He ran to her and she threw her arms around his neck in relief as she cried. "Molly, it's okay. We're here now. Molly, where's your mommy?" The little girl shook her head. "The man took me from her." Mulder beckoned one of the other agents over. "How's Paulson?" "Once in the leg. Went clean through. We've got paramedics on the way as soon as the building is secure." "Take her," Mulder said, handing Molly over. "Mulder!" she cried. "Molly, please, stay here. I'm going to get your mom." With a quick kiss to her forehead, he headed out again. ************************************* "Ah! Agent Mulder, I presume," came the voice from Mulder's right as he entered the room. Luccini stood there, Scully right in front of him. Mulder could just picture the gun that was pressed against her back. "Let her go," Mulder said. "Yeah, sure." Luccini laughed. "I got no reason to let her go, Mulder. She ran out on me. She lied to me about my daughter and she's all ready to snitch on me. And after all the help I gave her." "Help? You call beating the crap out of her help?" Mulder spat. "You don't know nothin', Mulder." Mulder paused only a moment. "You have the right to remain silent, if you give up that right, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." Luccini laughed harder this time. "Oh that's good. That's rich. I got your girlfriend here at gunpoint and you're reading me my rights." He smiled. "Goodbye, Agent Mulder." He lifted his gun from Scully's back and aimed it at Mulder. "NO!" Scully yelled and ran forward. The next thing Mulder knew a shot rang out and Scully had a look of shock on her face just before she fell to the floor. "NOOOOOOO!" Mulder yelled. Just as he fell to her side another shot rang out. Then another and another. Mulder was unaware of the other agents storming the room, surrounding Luccini's lifeless body. ************************************* Three Hours Later Mulder sat on a plastic molded hospital chair in the waiting room, his face buried in his hands. Ruby and the boys and several other agents sat around the room, no one talking. "How ya doing?" Skinner asked, taking the seat next to him. "How do you think I'm doing?" "Mulder . . ." Both men looked up as a small voice spoke up. "Mulder?" They saw Molly standing there with a nurse. Mulder opened his arms and the little girl ran into them. "Not a scratch on her," the nurse said at Mulder's look. "Thank you." Mulder settled back into his chair, holding Molly in his lap as she began to doze. "I don't know what I'll do," he said softly to Skinner. "I don't_" "Mulder . . . don't." Everyone in the room looked up when the door opened again. Mulder stood, still holding Molly and moved over to the doctor. "Mr. Paulson is fine. He'll be off duty for several weeks but I see no reason he won't make a full recovery." The other's sighed in relief but Mulder merely stared expectantly at the man. The doctor smiled. "Miss Scully is doing fine. The bullet went clean through missing all major arteries in her shoulder." Mulder felt his knees go weak but he managed to remain standing. The other's echoed his sigh of relief. "I'd say she got off very lucky." "Can we see her?" Mulder asked, holding Molly close. The doctor nodded. "She still a little groggy from the anesthesia." The doctor smiled at the look on Mulder's face. "Room 311." Mulder was off in an instant. ************************************* Scully turned as the door to her room opened, and smiled. "Mommy," Molly said. Mulder brought her over and mom and daughter carefully hugged. "You okay?" Scully asked her. Molly nodded. Scully's eyes moved to Mulder's. "Hey." "Hey." "Mulder_" She was cut off as he leaned over and pressed his lips to hers. "I'm just glad you're going to be okay." "Me, too." "So . . ." "So." He took her hand in his suddenly terribly unsure. He had no idea what effect this all had on her. He wasn't sure what she wanted now that it was all over. "Mulder," she said. "Yeah?" "Nothing's changed." He looked up not daring to hope and she smiled. "Shot or not I still love you. I'm afraid you're stuck with me, G-Man." He grinned. "In that case, Dana Scully . . . will you marry me?" "Like you even have to ask." He smiled leaning in to kiss her again as Molly giggled. ************************************* Once Scully recovered they wasted no time in getting married. During the trial of Luccini's men it was a tough time for Scully. But every night Mulder would hold her close and let her know she had nothing to be afraid of anymore. About seven months after the trial ended, the Mulder family welcomed a new baby into their home. ************************************* It was almost a year after they first met that the letter came. Scully came home from picking Molly up from school. After putting the baby to sleep in his crib, she started sorting through the mail as Molly settled herself in front of the TV. Scully stared in confusion at the letter addressed to her. She opened it and read it in shock. The minute Mulder walked in the door that night she pulled him over to talk about the letter she received. "Well," he asked her, after reading the familiar print. "What do you want to do?" She nodded. "I want to do it. I'll still be a doctor but I think I can help more people if I do this." He nodded. "And I wouldn't be able to start right away. I want to wait until Jake is a little older. Mulder smiled thinking of his son. "Then I think you should." "You don't have a problem with it?" "Not if it's what you want, I don't." She smiled and kissed him. ************************************* Two And a Half Years Later Mulder and eight-year-old Molly looked up from where they were playing on the floor with three year old Jake. Mulder stood and moved to give his wife a kiss. "How'd it go?" "Fine." He smiled holding her close. "I still can't believe you're an FBI agent." "What, you don't think I can handle it?" "I'd never say such a thing. So? Tell me about your assignment." "Well, it's here in DC." He smiled. "Well I hardly think they'd put you in Wichita unless they moved me, too. And I've not heard a word about a transfer." "I think that's because the X-Files only exist here," she said smiling. "So? Who's the new partner?" She shook her head. "I'll tell you after I meet him." "Him? Should I be worried my wife is partnered with another man." "Never. Come on," she said giving him a quick kiss. "Let's go out for dinner to celebrate." ************************************* Next Morning Mulder pulled the car to a stop in the HQ parking garage. "You ready?" "Ready as I'll ever be." He nodded and they climbed out. They walked in together and she rode down to the basement with him. "I'll see you for lunch after your meeting?" he clarified. She nodded. Another quick kiss and he watched as the elevator doors closed. ************************************* Two Hours Later Mulder was going over some slides when a knock sounded on his door. He glanced at his watch. Couldn't be Scully. She said she'd be busy until lunch. He went back to his slides. "Nobody down here but the FBI's most unwanted." He heard the door creak open and someone enter. He looked up and stopped surprised. "Agent Mulder. I'm Dana Scully. I've been assigned to work with you." "Me?" he asked surprised. "What, you think I'd be so confident about a new partner if I didn't already know and love him completely." "How'd you pull this off?" he asked, standing and moving over to her. "Skinner. It was actually his idea. Said something about 'no one else could keep Mulder in line, maybe his wife would have better luck'." Mulder grinned pulling her into a hug then kissed her. She smiled. "Watch it, Mulder. I don't think Skinner would approve." "Like I care." She grinned. "We should get to work, partner." "Very well. Let's get on with it. Do you believe in the existence of extraterrestrials?" he asked softly. She laughed and kissed him again. ~The End~ Author's notes cont: Okay so now there's TWO stories longer than Through the Years.
