She missed him, every minute of the day and she still refused to talk to her father. Her mother had tried to make them talk again, but that hadn't been a big success. They had both just been sitting there, stubbornly refusing to talk with each other. The last words her father had heard from here were "Thanks Dad" and that had been more than a week ago. As promised he hadn't said a word about the whole thing to his wife, but her daughter had told her what had happened that afternoon. Even his wife had told him he had overreacted. And now he didn't know what to do anymore. He and Dana had always had a close father-daughter relationship. He only wanted the best for her and he thought he had been doing the right thing, but he started to think that he might have done the wrong thing after all. He sat outside for a long time, trying to find a way to make everything alright again, and it already started to become dark outside when it finally hit him. He knew what he had to do to make things right again. THE NEXT MORNING Dana was still lying in bed, when her father entered her room. She feigned to be asleep, but he didn't buy it. He sat down and waited until she opened her eyes. After a few minutes she realized that he wouldn't go away when she kept her eyes closed, so with a sigh she opened them, looking at him wearily. Her father stared at her. "You really loved him didn't you?" She nodded, avoiding his staring eyes, because she didn't want him to see the tears in her eyes. "Why didn't you tell us?" That's what had hurt the most. Not the realization that she was in love with her dancing teacher, but the idea that she had fallen in love and hadn't told him about it. They used to tell each other everything and this was the first time she hadn't, because she had been too afraid for his reaction. He didn't know this Fox Mulder, he had only heard the stories about him and they had formed his judgement. What he hadn't wanted to see was that Fox really loved his daughter. A lot. It was what he had always wanted her to find in life. A person who loved her and wanted to take care of her and when that person had been there, he had sent him away. Because of rumors and his reputation. The man who had always told his children never to judge by looks and gossip, who had taught them to look further than that, had done the opposite himself. He had judged, before he had even met Fox and now it was too late. "Because I was afraid what you might do if you would find out." She barely whispered. He pulled her in his arms and hugged her. "And I ruined it anyway, didn't I?" He said with self-knowledge. He felt her nodding against his chest and when she looked up at him she was crying. "I'm so sorry honey. I didn't want to hurt you, I only wanted to protect you. I guess I didn't do a very good job after all, did I?" She shook her head and after all that time she was finally able to say the words she never thought she would say "I'm sorry too dad, I shouldn't have lied to you and mom." "It's alright, we all made mistakes, you think we can start over again?" He looked at his daughter with a smile. She smiled at him through her tears "I think so." He hugged her and even though they had talked things out, he knew he still had to do one last thing. NEXT DAY AFTERNOON Bill Scully stood in front of room 14 of the Motel Highlands, he had been told that this was the room where Fox Mulder was staying. He had gone to Fox's friends to ask them where he was staying. They had been reluctant to tell him, but after he had explained the whole situation they had given him all the information he needed. Now he was standing there, knocking on the door, waiting for Fox to open it. After a few minutes the door went open and he stared in the face of a not to happy looking Fox Mulder. Fox almost closed the door again when he saw who it was, but Bill stopped him. "Wait, I have to talk to you." Fox looked at him wearily. "I thought everything was said already?" "It hasn't, can I come in?" With a sigh Fox motioned him to walk further. Standing in the motel room Bill looked at Fox. "First of all I owe you an apology for everything I did." Fox waited for him to continue. "What I did was wrong. I know that now, but at that moment I didn't want to see it. All I saw was my little girl, of course she isn't so little anymore, but I still see her that way. Unfortunately for their fathers little girls do grow up and sometimes they do things their fathers never expect them to do. I was jealous, she used to adore me and now somebody else has become the object of her affection." Saying that he had a sad look in his eyes. "Your daughter loves you, Sir." "I know she does and I also know she loves you." He stared at the man his daughter had fallen in love with. "You sent me away." "I did and that was wrong too. That's why I'm here. I talked to Dana this morning and at least she's talking to me again, but even though she doesn't want to say it to me I know she misses you." "I miss her too." "I would like you to come back with me." "I don't want to sound harsh, but I got fired remember?" "I know but I'll take care of that. Listen, this is what I want to do....." He started to tell Fox what his plan and when he finished, he had convinced Fox. Together they left the motel room to go back to the park. THAT NIGHT Dana was having a discussion with her mother. Her mother tried to convince her to come with them to the party that night. Dana was stubbornly refusing, she might have talked things out with her father but she was still feeling miserable because she missed Fox. Her mother however didn't want to hear anything about it. She knew where her husband had gone and she had promised him to talk Dana into joining them, he would do the rest. After another half hour of convincing she finally gave up and agreed to go to the party, with the threat that she would leave the minute she felt like it. Her mother agreed, already happy that she had been able to convince her. After getting dressed they walked to the main building, where the party would be held. Dana had asked where her father was, but her mother had said that they would see him at the party. Her father was already sitting at their table, together with Charlie and he welcomed his wife and daughter, saying that they both looked beautiful. As they both sat down, his wife quickly looked at her, asking with her eyes if everything had gone alright. He nodded reassuringly, before Dana could see it. The evening passed, with guests and staff performing on stage, singing and dancing. And it was almost time for the last dance. The last dance was a tradition, Dana remembered Fox telling her that he was always the one who did the last dance of the evening, this year he wouldn't. Lost in her thoughts she didn't see or hear the whispers and looks when Fox entered the building. He quickly greeted his surprised friends, than made his way to Dana and her family. She didn't see him until he stood right in front of her, holding his hand out to her, asking "May I have this last dance Dana?" She looked up in shock when she realized who it was. Her eyes went from Fox to her father, asking him for permission. He nodded with a smile. Smiling she stood up and put her hand in Fox's hand. He thanked her father with a smile, before he pulled her with him to the stage. On stage Bryan was ready to start with his speech to announce the last dance of the year. Walking on the stage, hand-in-hand with Dana, Fox interrupted him. Bryan's jaw dropped when he saw them, together. Fox took the microphone from a shocked Bryan and said "I always used to do the last dance of the season, this year somebody told me I couldn't, but I'm going to do it anyway, with a very special person." His eyes locked with Dana's and he smiled at her lovingly, he continued "A person who learned me all about believing in yourself and believing in love. Someone I admire and love very much, Dana Scully." He extended his hand to her and she took it shyly, tears shining in her eyes. When the music started they started their dance. Looking through open doors, desperately wanting to find something, not knowing exactly what it was he was looking for, but it had to be the truth. Truth he had found the evening he met her. They danced, lost for the world, smiles on their faces and their eyes locked. The dance ended with Fox swirling her above his head, slowly lowering her. He kissed her and whispered he loved her. "I love you too" she mumbled against his chest. The dance was over, but they continued their own dance. They didn't know what was going to happen in the future, but for now everything was alright again. The End Will they stay together? Will their relationship have a future.
